How to Reforest: Restoring Nature for a Better Future Reforesting is the process of planting trees in deforested or degraded areas to restore ecosystems and combat climate change. This practice not only helps to recover lost biodiversity but also improves air quality, enhances water cycles, and supports local communities. Why is reforesting important? Deforestation has led to habitat loss, reduced biodiversity, and increased carbon emissions. Reforesting addresses these issues by reestablishing forests that serve as carbon sinks, protect wildlife, and prevent soil erosion. What are the key steps in reforesting? 1. Site Assessment: Evaluate the area to determine soil quality, climate, and existing vegetation to select suitable tree species. 2. Tree Planting: Choose native species to ensure ecological compatibility and start planting. Ensure proper spacing and care for young trees. 3. Ongoing Care: Monitor growth, manage pests, and provide water and nutrients to support tree development. 4. Community Involvement: Engage local communities in reforestation efforts to enhance project success and provide economic benefits. How can you contribute to reforesting efforts? - Support Reforestation Projects: Donate to or volunteer with organizations focused on tree planting. - Plant Trees: Participate in local tree-planting events or start a project in your own community. - Advocate for Forest Conservation: Promote policies that protect existing forests and support reforestation initiatives. At our self-sustainable city project, we are integrating reforestation into our development plans to restore natural habitats and enhance environmental health. Learn more about our efforts and how you can get involved by visiting Self-Sustainable City. We’ve teamed up with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to help protect drinking water, reduce the pollution of lakes and restore streams in Central Ohio. Together with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google and Bath & Body Works, we’ve collectively contributed $1.2 million to TNC’s project to divert runoff from 700+ acres of farmland through a restored wetland, naturally filtering out excess nutrients and harmful sediment. “At Ryan, we are committed to sustainable solutions that protect and restore our planet,” said Joe Rozza P.E., BCEE, our Chief Sustainability Officer. “We are proud to partner with like-minded partners to support efforts focused on restoring and protecting vital ecosystems in ways that benefit local communities; by bringing together the size and scale of our organizations, we can drive significant impact.” This is just the first of many projects identified by TNC in the region, with restoration efforts set to begin in early 2026. https://lnkd.in/g3kj89ij

Pickfords is championing No Mow May! 🌱 Since 1930's, the UK has lost approximately 97% of flower-rich meadows, along with the essential food sources they provide for pollinators like bees and butterflies 🐝🦋 A healthy lawn with areas of long grass and wildflowers can benefit wildlife, reduce pollution and even store carbon in the soil. Throughout May, Plantlife has been encouraging households and businesses to participate in #NoMowMay and do so every year, allowing wild plants to flourish during the early summer season. This year we have taken part at our Kings Langley, Hertfordshire branch, avoiding mowing our grass verges around the car park. As a result, Oxeye daisies (Lecanthemum vulgare) have bloomed. The yellow centre of the oxeye daisy is made up of numerous small flowers that hold nectar, attracting various pollinating insects, including butterflies, bees and hoverflies At Pickfords, we have adopted a nature-positive approach to help reduce our impact on the environment. Climate posturing vs Climate Action: 1. Earth Matter NY has been operating a successful compost site on Governor's Island for 15 years - but The New York Climate Exchange , a "collaborative site" for "accelerating climate change solutions", is going to force Earth Matter to move. The irony --- "Reduce Food Waste" is already #1 on Project Drawdown list of solutions, but NYC is displacing a successful compost operation so they can make a big building for people to talk about climate solutions 🤮 2. Big Reuse has been running a composting operation under the Queensboro bridge - but now the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation is evicting them. Why? PARKING SPOTS. Really? Yes. Really. The volume of NYC's food waste is staggering, and we KNOW that reducing food waste is critical to avoiding climate catastrophe. But here we are, watching multiple NYC government departments gut city compost funding and displace community composting operations. We don't need more magic solutions. We need government to stop harming and disrupting those who are working so hard to DO the climate work that's needed! https://lnkd.in/gkUVdw5W

A 2000 m2 #pollution filter has been constructed by the community organisation in the hopes of cleaning up the Hogsmill Chalk Stream. Carried out in partnership with #Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, owner and manager of Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve, it means water systems through the popular #greenspace will now benefit from the removal of pollutants that could damage #ecosystems and local habitats. An example of a nature-based solution, water from the Green Lanes Stream will now be diverted through a sediment trap and two separate wetlands, bringing clean, filtered water to areas downstream of the Stepping Stones – a renowned beauty spot. In the past, streams were found to be suffering adversely from high levels of pollutants, with sources including urban road runoff, raw #sewage discharge, and poorly connected plumbing. A series of planting days have now been announced by South East Rivers Trust [#SERT], due to take place in spring, which will see residents given the chance to plant vegetation, with a focus on those that can help absorb and counter pollutants. Schools, community organisations, and individuals all have the opportunity to take part, with flora including yellow flag iris, ragged robin, purple loosestrife, and brooklime among the types of species that will be introduced. We are delighted that the construction phase of this important wetlands project has now been completed. It is destined to become a jewel in the crown of the Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve. The public has shown great enthusiasm for this project, and we will soon be calling on volunteers and community groups to add the plants that will really make the wetlands flourish as a magnet for wildlife. The water quality improvements that will result from the wetlands are designed to help the river become a healthier place for all, especially wildlife that thrive in a chalk stream, such as brown trout,’ said Dr Bella Davis, co-CEO of SERT. ‘The council is committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity in our borough, as per our Biodiversity Action Plan 2020-30,’ added Cllr John Beckett, Chair of the Environment Committee at Epsom & Ewell Borough Council. ‘This partnership project with the South East Rivers Trust will help to ensure that the Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve is a place where nature can thrive; from woodpeckers, hedgehogs and bats – to species whose numbers have dwindled such as water voles, fish and eels. We know our residents cherish this Local Nature Reserve and I hope that many can join the community planting days, which are a unique opportunity to be part of this fantastic project.’

Yesterday I had the privilege of participating in the National Tree Planting Day at Moi Girls Nairobi together with the Council of Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM Kenya) and all the secretariat. Witnessing the collective effort and enthusiasm from various sectors, including families, businesses, and government officials, was truly inspiring. It solidified the power of #collective #action to address #climatechange. Our country’s dedication to environmental #restoration is more crucial than ever. The recent devastating floods, displacing hundreds of thousands and claiming lives, are a stark reminder of the urgency of climate action. National Tree Planting Day serves as a powerful symbol of our commitment to a more resilient future, and everyone has a chance to play a key role in its success. #Harnessing what I would like to call the Power of C-C-I for #Kenya's #GreenFuture could Make a Significant Impact: #CarbonCapture: Our landscapes are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including more frequent and intense floods. Planting trees native to specific regions can significantly enhance carbon sequestration, mitigating these harmful effects. Individuals can advocate for planting initiatives focused on indigenous trees & fruit trees maximizing their environmental impact. #CommunityCohesion: We have a rich tradition of communal living and environmental stewardship. National Tree Planting Day presents a perfect opportunity to strengthen this spirit, especially in the wake of the floods. Organize tree planting events with friends, family, and neighbors. This fosters a sense of shared responsibility for the environment while promoting team building and community engagement, aiding in rebuilding efforts. #InspirationforChange: Planting a tree is a powerful act of hope and a symbol of a greener future. Use such a day to inspire others to embrace sustainable practices beyond the planting exercise. Partner with environmental organizations to offer workshops on eco-friendly living, reducing waste, and water conservation. By empowering others to become changemakers, we can create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the planting day. National Tree Planting Day is more than just a symbolic gesture; it's a crucial step towards a more sustainable future for Kenya. By planting trees, we can help mitigate future Climate change effects, rebuild our communities, and create a lasting impact. Let's leverage this opportunity to champion environmental responsibility and inspire positive change within our communities. Remember, every tree planted is a step towards a greener Kenya. Let's all be part of the solution! Veronica M. Nduva, CBS Gabriel Nyamu, Your Purpose Coach Paul Ngugi Peter Ngigi CPA, SHRM-SCP Jane Mutisya Kathleen M.
