Urban and rural landscapes provide a myriad of ways to help combat climate change. Carbon Sequestration is just one, but CRITICAL, part they play 🔄🌳🔄
In today's Jargon Buster episode, we debunk the critical process of Carbon Sequestration and how it is often confused with carbon capture. We look at how it works and help understand how it combats climate change, therefore supporting biodiversity and land use. #CarbonSequestration #ClimateChange #Sustainability

#Mangroves are a crucial #naturebasedsolution for #mitigating and #adapting to climate change. Here are several key aspects of their relationship with climate change: #CarbonSequestration: Mangroves are highly efficient at sequestering and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Their complex root systems and dense vegetation trap carbon in the soil and biomass, helping to offset greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change. #CoastalProtection: Mangroves act as natural barriers that protect coastlines from erosion, storm surges, and extreme weather events such as hurricanes and tsunamis. Their dense root systems and vegetation reduce wave energy and stabilize shorelines, thereby providing resilience to coastal communities against climate-related hazards. #BiodiversitySupport: Mangrove ecosystems are biodiverse habitats that support a wide range of plant and animal species, including fish, crustaceans, birds, and mammals. Protecting and restoring mangroves not only conserves biodiversity but also ensures the resilience of these ecosystems to climate change impacts. #Fisheries and #Livelihoods: Mangroves are important nursery areas for many commercially valuable fish and shellfish species. They support fisheries and provide livelihoods for coastal communities, contributing to food security and economic sustainability. Climate change resilience of these communities often depends on the health of mangrove ecosystems. #ClimateAdaptation: Mangroves play a role in climate adaptation by providing ecosystem services such as water purification, coastal stabilization, and habitat protection. Restoring degraded mangrove areas or implementing sustainable management practices can enhance the adaptive capacity of coastal regions facing climate-related challenges. #BlueCarbon: Mangroves, along with other coastal ecosystems like seagrasses and salt marshes, are recognized for their "blue carbon" storage potential. Blue carbon refers to the carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, including mangrove soils and biomass. Protecting and restoring these blue carbon habitats is essential for climate change mitigation efforts. In summary, mangroves are a nature-based solution with multiple benefits related to climate change mitigation, adaptation, biodiversity conservation, coastal protection, and sustainable livelihoods. Their preservation and restoration are critical components of global strategies for addressing climate change and promoting resilience in coastal areas.
#Mangroves are the perfect nature-based solution to tackle #ClimateChange since they capture & store carbon. 🌱 However, 1/3 of global mangrove ecosystems are depleted or severely degraded. 🌏 - IPBES #GlobalAssessment Let's protect them #ForOurPlanet & #ForNature ⬇️ EU Environment and Climate

Nature-Based Solutions (NbS): The Key to Climate Resilience #NatureBasedSolutions imply significant potentials to reduce, avoid, or remove greenhouse emissions. As a sustainability coach, I firmly believe that NbS are pivotal in tackling climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and supporting sustainable development. The infographic from the Ecologic Institute underscores this by highlighting the various ecosystems where NbS can be effectively implemented. Key Highlights: 1. Forests: Protecting remaining forests is crucial for climate mitigation and biodiversity. Natural ecosystems must be preserved and not converted. 2. Croplands: Agroforestry offers numerous co-benefits including soil health and food production. Proper management practices can significantly improve soil carbon and overall ecosystem health. 3. Grasslands: Avoiding degradation and improving grazing intensity can preserve natural and semi-natural grasslands, contributing to climate resilience. 4. Terrestrial wetlands: Protecting and restoring wetlands is essential. These areas play a key role in water retention and flood mitigation, crucial for adapting to climate changes. 5. Coastal wetlands: Restoring degraded coastal wetlands can enhance marine biodiversity and protect shorelines from erosion. 6. Urban settlements: Establishing green infrastructure within urban areas is vital for climate change adaptation and improving urban resilience. My perspective: Integrating NbS into our climate action plans is not just beneficial but necessary. As a sustainability coach, I advocate for a holistic approach where individuals, communities, and organizations come together to implement these solutions. Here’s how we can collectively contribute: - Educate and raise awareness: Understanding the importance and potential of NbS is the first step. Educate your network and communities about these solutions. - Adopt sustainable practices: Whether it's in agriculture, urban planning, or daily life, adopting sustainable practices can lead to significant positive changes. - Support policies and initiatives: Advocate for policies that promote NbS and support initiatives that aim to restore and protect natural ecosystems. By embracing NbS, we not only address climate change but also create healthier, more resilient environments for future generations. Let’s take action today for a sustainable tomorrow. Learn more about how NbS can drive climate action and sustainable development in this detailed infographic by the [Ecologic Institute](https://lnkd.in/egrKKKZk).
