Excited to share a blog Kathryn Merkeley published today: “Implementing Trauma-Informed Care (TIC): A Tool to Prevent Violence in Healthcare.” This piece provides essential tools and insights for Healthcare Organizations aiming to prioritize safety and empathy. Through a comprehensive look at integrating TIC principles within healthcare environments, Katy’s work illuminates a path towards reducing violence and fostering a supportive atmosphere for patients and healthcare workers alike. Drawing from her own extensive frontline clinical experience and more recent work in Patient Safety and Performance Improvement, the article is a great read for leaders dedicated to building a culture of safety and respect. It’s fascinating to see how TIC principles can extend beyond healthcare—reflecting on my own experiences in government, public health, and disaster response, the relevance is strong. Well done, Katy! A must-read for anyone committed to making healthcare, public health —and beyond—a safer, more empathetic place. #HealthcareSafety #TraumaInformedCare #HealthcareLeadership https://lnkd.in/gs4PGFfU

Money worries are increasingly common amongst NHS staff. 😕 This is a BIG problem. Here's why: Research commissioned by NHS England estimates the cost of poor financial wellbeing to be £431,000 for every 1,000 staff members. 😬 Why❓ Because poor financial wellbeing is associated with: - lower productivity at work ❌ - higher rates of mental health problems ❌ - higher rates of physical health problems ❌ - higher rates of absence from work ❌ There are about 2 million full-time NHS staff. This means the total cost of poor financial wellbeing is ~£862 million/year. 😳 Addressing this problem must be an absolute priority for the NHS.

Decreasing mental health access legislative hurdles- for healthcare workers- matters. Yesterday during the North Carolina Clinician & Physician Retention and Wellbeing Consortium (NCCPRW) Meeting - it was absolutely inspiring to hear J. Corey Feist, JD, MBA Stefanie Simmons, MD FACEP Nadia Charguia Chip Baggett speak about the initiatives are being created on a system level to improve healthcare worker well-being. I always advocate for recognizing our individual autonomy for creating change AND at the same time- our systems need to be fixed. Decreasing legislative hurdles so physicians and all healthcare workers can seek appropriate mental health care without fear of retaliation MATTERS. 🌱During yesterday’s meeting- I was reminded of a very deeply personal time. I suffered from postpartum depression twice and the second time, sought pharmacotherapy only when I had hit a point of severe desperation. AND I only took it for a brief period because of fear of not just how it would be perceived socially but also the potential legislative ramifications and the very real fear of how it would impact my career. Today I share my immense gratitude to the entire team at North Carolina Medical Society for its clear stance for healthcare worker wellbeing. I also urge you to support the work that Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation is doing and sign the Reauthorize & Fund the Lorna Breen Act. Link in comments👇🏽

It really is very hard to understand this decision. The variation in access to psychological support for doctors, nurses and other health professionals within acute trusts across our country is significant, with some not having any substantively funded posts at all, and access to mental health support through GPs taking a year or more in many regions. NHS Practitioner Health was also able to provide addictions services to our secondary care colleagues. More broadly, there is a lack of understanding in this arena that specialist psychological support for health professions is a specialist area- that requires a deep understanding of the context and the issues that our colleagues and healthcare teams face. We wouldn’t ask a dermatologist to step in for a renal transplant surgeon would we?? We shouldn’t undervalue the need for specialist support for health professionals, both to respond to occupational trauma and other distressing work-related issues, and to support healthy team cultures that enable colleagues, and patients, to stay well. This is the morally right thing to do, but also is key to a financially sustainable and safe healthcare service. ———- Open letter that we can sign - https://lnkd.in/esBc8f4Y

Understanding Patient Relatives' Questions in Healthcare Sometimes, relatives of patients ask questions not because they lack knowledge, but because they seek reassurance. It's a natural coping mechanism during stressful times. These relatives are often overwhelmed and anxious about their loved one's health. Their questions are a way to manage their emotions and gain comfort. Unfortunately, many healthcare providers miss this cue. Instead of offering the needed emotional support, they become frustrated or dismissive, adding to the family's stress. 😔⚠️ Recognizing this behavior can make a huge difference. When healthcare providers show empathy and patience, it reassures the relatives and strengthens their trust in the care team. 🩺💡 Next time a patient's family member asks a seemingly obvious question, take a moment to provide reassurance. A kind word or a gentle explanation can go a long way. 🌼✨ Let's foster a healthcare environment where emotional support is as vital as medical care. Understanding and compassion can heal more than we realize. 💖🌍 Share your experiences and thoughts on this. How have you seen reassurance make a difference? Let's discuss ways to improve our approach in healthcare.
