It was an honor to be a part of ASSOCHAM Conference on Diagnostics on the theme Smart Diagnostics: Bridging Gaps, Transforming Health Care and engaged in a plenary session to Overcoming Challenges- Expanding Diagnostics Reach through Technology and Partnerships. Our discussion emphasized on the key areas in Diagnostics industry: 1. Challenges in Diagnostics Delivery in providing diagnostics services in Tier III and IV cities, including logistical, infrastructural, and resource limitations. 2. Bridging the Access Gap and identifying critical needs and strategies to enhance access to diagnostics 3. Leveraging New Technologies which may be harnessed to expand the reach of diagnostics, including the use of AI, telemedicine, and mobile diagnostics units. 4. Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Models to enhance diagnostics infrastructure and services in Tier 2 and 3 cities, driving collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders. 5. Public Health Expectations and the crucial role of point-of-care diagnostics in meeting these expectations, especially in underserved regions. 6. Limitations of Existing Infrastructure and exploring potential solutions to enhance their capacity to provide comprehensive diagnostics services. There's a story that we often re-tell at #IMMAST. It's a funny anecdote about how the Father of Laparoscopy Dr Tehemton Erach Udwadia used to "request" peers to allow him to stand in their ORs, observe, and learn. Dr Udwadia was convinced that minimal access surgery was the path to follow if any positive impact were to be made on care outcomes, and relieve India's overburdened healthcare infrastructure. The story is entertaining, as stories should be. It also leaves listeners in awe, as only few stories do. Like the mythical Arjun, Dr Udwadia had eyes on one prize alone - making ORs safer so that care outcomes could improve. To achieve this goal, he read and researched extensively, worked in rural parts of India to understand a patient's social or financial issues, attended other surgeons' ORs at odd hours to learn from colleagues, hustled like no-tomorrow to secure financial support for a training facility at par with international standards, and left no stones unturned to take it beyond any other training facility in the world. One idea can change the world.
