Hi EV addicts, the European Union is significantly advancing its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, aligned with the climate objectives of the European Green Deal. According to Transport & Environment (T&E), the EU has seen a more than threefold increase in slow charging points since late 2020, reaching over half a million by the end of 2023. Fast charging points have surged by over fourfold in the same period, reflecting a proactive approach to meet the 2030 target of 3 million chargers. >> Particularly notable is France, leading with nearly 120,000 public chargers, closely followed by Germany, which boasts the largest fast-charging network in Europe with almost 23,000 points. Both Spain and Italy have also demonstrated significant growth, enhancing their charging networks to support increasing EV registrations. >> This infrastructure boom has occurred ahead of the enforcement of the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which mandates comprehensive charger deployment along major EU roads by 2024 and ties the expansion of charging facilities directly to the number of EVs registered. >> The rapid development of the EU’s charging infrastructure is not only keeping pace with but now surpassing the growth of the EV fleet, dispelling concerns about potential bottlenecks in EV adoption. This expansion supports the rising number of electric vehicles, contributing robustly to the EU's sustainability targets. >> With strategic policies like AFIR and continued infrastructural growth, the EU is poised to lead in sustainable mobility globally, ensuring that its infrastructure keeps pace with technological advancements and environmental commitments. Great to attend today’s seminar at DTU on: ⚡e2flex – How willing are EV owners to provide flexibility?⚡ The event presented the first results of the e2flex project, diving into how electric vehicle (EV) owners can contribute to energy flexibility services and the challenges involved. For me, the key highlights were: 🚗 EV owners (and those with heat pumps, home batteries, etc.) are a diverse group with varying needs and priorities. Tailored incentive models are crucial to engage these different target groups effectively. 🐙 There’s no single solution to achieving a resilient, green energy system. Optimizing multiple approaches—such as time-of-use tariffs, distributed flexibility assets, and (maybe) updated regulations—is essential. 🤝 Collaboration across academia, grid operators, and industry is vital. It’s encouraging to see stakeholders working together to accelerate the green transition. While progress since similar studies, like those by True Energy A/S - a Landis+Gyr Company and Radius that I presented in March 2022, remains slow, I left the event with optimism. The collective effort and shared determination among participants are promising signs that innovative solutions are on the horizon ⚡ 🔋 🚗 . Thank you Mads Paabøl Jensen Radius, Christoffer Greisen Hybrid Greentech, Torben Fog Spirii, Claire Bergaentzlé DTU Management, Maj Dang Trong Nordic Energy Research and all the other amazing speakers 😊 Read more about the e2flex project here: https://wind.dtu.dk/e2flex #EV #GreenTransition #Flexibility
