There’s going to be 4 new sports at the Paris 2024 Olympics: → Surfing → Sport climbing → Skateboarding → Breaking (dance battle - who would’ve thought?) Now, I love the idea of new sports entering the Olympics. And there are plenty looking for a way in like the World Football Freestyle Association - a sport that has a right to enter the Olympics just as any other (introduced to me by Dan Wood). With the advent of new sports coming in, it makes me wonder two questions: #1 — Is there a capacity for the number of sports coming in? #2 — Will some sports be pushed out? There are certainly some sports that are gaining a fan base and viewership and other “old” sports that are losing engagement. What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments.

In junior swimming, we often see early specialization in strokes and distances. But for young athletes, exploring a variety is key! Exposure to all strokes: Butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle - each challenges different muscle groups and techniques. This well-roundedness lays a strong foundation for future success in any stroke they choose to focus on. Distance diversification: From explosive sprints to strategic distance races, competing across various lengths keeps things interesting and develops different pacing skills. Beyond the pool: Open water, finswimming, lifesaving, pool rescue - these related disciplines can enhance their swimming skills, introduce new challenges, and boost overall fitness. By encouraging exploration, we nurture well-adapted, injury-resistant athletes who appreciate the full spectrum of aquatic sports. This not only builds a well-rounded skillset but also fosters a lifelong love for swimming that transcends competition. #LongTermAthleteDevelopment #SwimDifferent #VarietyIsKey

The 100 meters final captivates the world for a few electrifying seconds. In an effort to stay relevant and exciting, the Olympics has introduced new sports like breakdancing, surfing, skateboarding, and climbing—and I like it, though I still wish squash was an Olympic sport. I remain drawn to traditional events like swimming in the first week and athletics as the Games progress and do enjoy watching the world compete. What amazes me is the immense effort and preparation that athletes put into these brief moments of competition. The discipline required to be among the top 10 in any sport, for a fleeting glimpse of glory, is nothing short of extraordinary. I salute those who dedicate themselves to this level of excellence, often at great personal cost. As we watch these athletes perform, let's not forget to celebrate their journeys—their stories of perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. I hope they take pride in their paths as much as I do in their achievements. What other "new" sports are going to be added in the next 50 years? #olympics #steppingup #competing #winningandlosing

This age distribution chart of Olympic athletes is really intersting: • Oldest Sport: Equestrian • Oldest Athlete: 69 years old • Youngest Sport: Skateboarding • Youngest Athlete: 12 years old The most surprising fact (IMO) is that triathletes are the second oldest group, especially when you consider the age gap to swimming and cycling. What stands out most to you? P.S. Follow me (Joe Pompliano) for more sports business content! #sports #sportsbiz #linkedinsports
