Piping for Process Plants: Leak Testing and Verification Leak testing is a procedure that inspectors use to determine whether an object or system is functioning within a specific leak limit, checking for any leaks or holes in a system or component that could allow fluids or gasses to escape. It involves pressurizing the system or component with a gas or liquid and then monitoring for any decrease in pressure, which could indicate a leak. There are various methods of leak testing, including pressure decay, bubble testing, and helium leak detection, each with its own advantages depending on the specific application. During leak testing procedures, inspectors will examine for various types of defects such as cracks, holes, inadequate seals, and other flaws or imperfections that could result in the escape of gas or liquid from an object or system. The Importance of Piping in Process Industries Piping systems are a critical component of petroleum refineries, chemical plants, and other process facilities. They serve as the backbone for transporting various materials, often representing a significant portion of the overall investment in these units. Typically, the total installed cost of piping accounts for 20% to 50% of the total unit cost, making it a major expenditure in process design and construction. Process piping is used to transport a wide range of materials, including: Petroleum products Raw, intermediate, and unfinished chemicals Gas, steam, air, and water Fluidized solids Refrigerants Cryogenic fluids These materials must be handled under diverse conditions, depending on their properties and operating requirements. Consequently, piping systems are often classified into specific service categories to ensure appropriate design and safety measures: Cryogenic D Fluid Service: This category involves extremely low-temperature fluids, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or liquid nitrogen, which require specialized materials and insulation to prevent brittleness and maintain system integrity. Category M Fluid Service: Fluids in this category pose severe risks to human health due to high toxicity. Piping handling these fluids demands rigorous safety measures, strict containment, and reliable seals to prevent exposure. High-Pressure Service: This category covers fluids transported under exceptionally high pressures. The piping must be designed with robust materials, reinforced joints, and detailed stress analysis to prevent failures. Normal Fluid Service: This includes standard industrial fluids transported under typical conditions without extreme temperatures, pressures, or toxicity. These services often follow general design codes and standards. By categorizing fluid services, engineers can design piping systems that ensure operational safety, efficiency, and compliance with industry codes and regulations. Piping Handbook 2000 Mohinder L. PT&P designed and manufactured these variable spring hanger assemblies for a Flue Gas Cooler and SCR system in Thailand. The SCR system utilizes urea to reduce NOx levels. These variable spring hanger assemblies incorporate the use of three-bolt pipe clamps (fitted with metric bolting for this overseas order) ranging in sizes from 6″ to 12″ diameter with elevation differences ranging from 68-½ "″ to 138-1⁄2'' from the pipe rack structure steel member to the center of the pipe. The B-Type spring hanger assembly uses coil springs to support the load and allow for vertical movement. They are furnished with one lug welded to the top of the spring’s transition plate. The transition plate can be designed for different connection arrangements utilizing 2 lugs or a threaded connection. All forty-seven variable spring supports were quality-checked with a 100% spring coil deflection test utilizing a load cell to also set the assemblies at the prescribed installed load. These spring hanger assemblies were packaged for export shipment at our facility. Variable supports are typically used for the following considerations in piping systems: - Compensating for Thermal Expansion - Maintaining Stress and Load - Installation in Piping Systems - Maintenance - Supporting Heavy Loads Variable spring cans play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and stability of piping systems by compensating for thermal expansion or contraction, supporting heavy loads, and allowing for vertical movement. They are essential components in industries such as petrochemical, power generation, semiconductor, refining, paper and pulp processing, and other applications where large-scale piping systems are employed. This Thursday, you are cordially invited to attend our complimentary webinar presentation session on Pipe Support Field Inspection, Installation, and Maintenance. In 2020 the Global Vonk Choke valve production (which had been serving the market for some 50 years) ceased, this highly efficient ,simplistic designed and very popular valve was made obsolete and disposed of by then owner Emerson. The VONK valve was good, maybe too good. Valve and Flow Control Specialists as of 2023 has been pleased to say our operation continues to fulfil the support role of all Vonk products in the Australasia region. This role means the simplistic and economical maintenance of Vonks can continue for many years to come. Quoting the old part numbers we can supply approved replacement components OR we can through ongoing R & D technology / material enhancements supply wear parts that far exceed the old standard parts. Your choice we are here to support clients either way. In addition NEW valves are also being made available, still manufactured in Netherlands. Vonk choke valves had always been a “go to” valve where other manufacturers products were challenged in difficult severe service applications involving high pressure drops and volumes of sand or Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S). They handled these applications while maintaining class V shutoff in service where others struggled to achieve class III when new then degenerating thereafter in ongoing operation. Their trim design is robust and solid, easily maintained and it consists of just 4 key major parts or sections: a bean, a turning fork, a front disc and a protecting brush. The valve design is based on a rotating disc principle, which ensures optimal control and top performance proven to be effective for decades. Some examples of the main uses of Vonk Choke valves are the petrochemical industry, mining industry, oil and gas exploration on and offshore and underground gas storage. In these environments, their specific applications are for handling slurry, handling drilling fluids, fracturing, gas injection, water injection, steam injection, oil and gas production, as blow down valves, as gas lift valves or as level control valves.
