May 22nd. International Day for Biological Diversity In a previous life, I was a man who couldn’t have cared less about biodiversity. Blind to the importance of the differences that bind us all together. But life has a way of opening your eyes when you least expect it. Today, biodiversity is not just a concept to me; its protection is the reason for my existence. Walking through the wild landscapes where Akashinga operates, our teams fight everyday to preserve the delicate balance of nature. We see the world through a lens of responsibility. Akashinga is on the frontlines, battling to protect biodiversity at a scale that aims to help tip the balance between survival and extinction. Each species we protect, each acre we defend, is a testament to our commitment to our shared planet. As a father of three, I look at my children and realise that their future is inextricably linked to the health of nature. We are not separate from this intricate system; we are a part of it. The richness of biodiversity is what sustains us, and if we hope to endure, we must fight for what’s right. This International Day for Biological Diversity, please take a moment to reflect that we are participants in a vast and beautiful system that is much bigger than ourselves. Let’s honour that system. For our future, for ourselves, and for the countless sentient beings and species that call this planet home. Akashinga

The dramatic loss of biodiversity requires fundamental changes in societies and the economy – above all political and institutional. The BIOTraCes project, a consortium between several European universities (Sweden, Hungary, Spain, Lithuania, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Germany, Portugal), seeks to identify these necessary structural changes, working with local initiatives, in order to facilitate a dialogue that allows co-production of transformative, fair and safe paths. The aim is to use an action-research approach, through the development of knowledge, tools and new approaches, disseminating the local agroecological transition initiative and its governance model. In Portugal, Terra Sintrópica and the ‘Mértola Laboratory of the Future’ strategy were selected as a case study, with the CES | Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra as its scientific partner. We share with you the footage filmed by BIOTraCes to our project. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eHtAxxHE #SustainableFarming #RegenerativeAgriculture #BIOTraCes #TerraSintrópica #syntropy #Mertola

Citizens of the Sea: eDNA through the lense of Citizen Science A new initiative looks forward to play a significant role in mapping ocean biodiversity at scale, particularly in remote areas that are often beyond research of scientists. How? Through the implication of sailors in collaboration with the Island Cruising Association rally and global racing organizations. This year 25 vessels will participate in the scale trial, gathering eDNA as they sail between New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji and New Caledonia. Attended the 2024 Global Ocean Development Forum in Qingdao, Shandong Province, in the company of China’s Minister of Natural Resources, H.E. Wang Guanghua and Vice Minister H.E. Sun Shuxian. In my address to the 600 delegates present, I stressed the need for concerted international cooperation if we’re going to achieve the targets of SDG14 and the UN Decade of Ocean Science. In particular, the legacy of China’s presidency of the Kunming-Montreal process that led to the adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework by the parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity, should forge on. The Framework’s target of protecting 30% of the planet’s land and sea by 2030 is critical to ameliorating the imminent threat of extinction facing a million species or more. From Antarctica to the Tropics, from the Pacific to the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, from EEZs to the High Seas, biodiversity-relevant Marine Protected Areas must be identified, prepared, instituted and governed. 30x30 will work if we all get on board without further delay. Together we can.
