📢 SQW, supported by UK Youth, was commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to undertake two research studies focused on the youth sector. We are pleased to share that both reports have been published today 👇 1. Volunteering in the youth sector - the research focuses on volunteers' motivations, roles and impact in supporting open access youth provision that any young person can attend. Read more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/edc7K9yy 2. The youth sector and enrichment - based on an evidence review, stakeholder interviews and young people focus groups, the research examines how the youth sector supports young people's enrichment opportunities and how DCMS and the Department for Education might extend access in future. Our poster titled, "Peer Learning Spaces for Sustainable Community-Engaged Research Partnerships," details our commitment to cultivating equitable partnerships through content AND process. This means the following: 🌼 Content: We're delivering up to date content on creating and maintaining community-engaged partnerships. 🌼 Process: We're co-creating that content with our partners to maintain the partnership long after the training is completed. For me, content AND process are intricately related and those connections make the project more meaningful. I'm not only concerned about the end destination, but also the path I choose to get there.

The Young Lewisham Project is dedicated to supporting vulnerable young people who face barriers to accessing alternative education. Many of these young people come from challenging backgrounds and lack the financial resources needed to pursue educational opportunities outside traditional settings. To expand its reach, the Young Lewisham Project aims to implement targeted outreach strategies to connect with these hard-to-reach young people . By collaborating with local community organisations, schools, and social services, the initiative seeks to identify young people who would benefit from alternative educational programs but are unaware of available options. Additionally, the project is exploring fundraising efforts to secure grants and sponsorships that can provide resources. This funding will help cover tuition costs, materials, and OCN accreditations, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their educational journeys. Ultimately, the Young Lewisham Project envisions a more inclusive education system where every young person has the opportunity to thrive, develop skills, and build a brighter future. If you are interested in sponsoring a young persons journey through the Young Lewisham Project please contact us at: corporatepartnerships@younglewisham.org.uk

Entry Point programs are the programs that youth first hear about that connect them to Directions Youth Services. When youth access these programs, we get the chance to talk to them. To learn who they are and, eventually, what kind of future they envision for themselves. This doesn't usually happen immediately. It takes time and repetition to build up the kind of trust that allows them to open up. When we get the chance to do this, doors open. We can refer them to other resources and programs. We can plan their next steps, together. This #HomelessnessActionWeek we'll be exploring two of our key Entry Point programs Directions Youth Services and sharing their stories.

Are you a community education provider located on the island of Ireland? Increase the visibility of your work by listing your organisation on our Community Education Map! 📍 People working in community education go above and beyond for the learners they serve. ‘Young at heart: Becoming a nation with children at its centre in 10 courageous steps’ - The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) Just imagine . . . the government comes together to declare that for too long children have been ignored, and that they have the courage to become child-centred nation. From idea to action . . . If a country made this declaration, what would be the practical next steps? Here are 10 key considerations to guide leaders towards becoming a child-centred nation. 1. Listening to children 2. Protecting the right to play 3. Sparking and developing creativity in children 4. Ensuring safety 5. Equipping children as peacemakers 6. Bringing hope and skills for climate adaptation 7. Designing with children instead of for children 8. Learning languages, place and local understanding 9. Putting value on the public good of good parenting 10. Considering international relations and foreign policy Here are some questions to sharpen government’s performance and move towards becoming a child-centred nation: Minister for Children: Who in my government is responsible for children? Who is listening to them, designing with them, and taking steps to improve the lives of children in my country? Foundations: Have we considered safety and access to essential resources? Are we building the attitudes, institutions and structures for a peaceful society? Long-term view: Are child-lens investment approaches being used? Are we considering the countries children will inherit? Valuing social good: Are children seen as agents that simply reduce the working capacity of their parents and thus tax revenues? Do we recognise the value to our country of raising children? Learning: Are changes required to our educational systems and curriculum? Have we listened to children and not designed play out of our school systems? “A child-centred nation is one with play at the centre of all primary education.” 🏫🚸🌿🍁🍂🪵 🚲 🛴 🛹🛼 🛝 🏃🏼♂️🏃🏼♀️🏃🏾👩🦽🚴🏿🚏🚶🏻🤸🏾♂️🤸🏼♂️🌳🏘️ #PlaySufficiency #FreePlay #Play #PhysicalLiteracy #PhysicalActivity #ActiveTravel #PlayStreet #SchoolStreets #StreetPlay #HomeZones #Playces #FreerangeUrbanNeighbourhoods #FUN #KnowBallGames #Parks #Playgrounds #UNCRC #Article31 #Splace

What if I said you had the ability to give the gift of uninterrupted time to think? I have a strong belief that we all have agency in our thinking and if we gift uninterrupted time to listen, we enable others to think for themselves too. A belief that my course: Time to Think Foundations of Facilitation continues to validate not only for myself but for those who try it. Intrigued? Join our November cohort – Scholarships are available for those in need of financial assistance, and who also identify as: a young person (35 and under) and / or Black, Indigenous, Person of Colour (BIPOC) and / or from the Global South and / or living with a disability. https://lnkd.in/eDYTHskX

Sigh, applaud, or question? Honestly, I’m torn... On the one hand, this new youth strategy sounds like a step in the right direction. A renewed focus on Youth Services, renovated spaces, and co-designed innovation with young people... finally! It's what we’ve been fighting for — systems change that’s been a long time coming. The new Labour Government is showing signs that they’re sticking to their word, especially with the announcement of a Youth Advisory Board to help shape this new strategy. This is our moment — Youth Voice could actually take center stage in a small part of the nation's leadership! But... is this a genuine opportunity? Or is it something that gets sidelined in three years when “budget cuts” hit? Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the final victory. But it’s a start! We’re seeing campaigns like #ChildrenAtTheTable from the Charities Coalition, The Youth Voices Campaign by DofE participants, and countless others finally creating a ripple in the system. And I’m here for it. But on the other hand... The NCS shutdown — without an immediate replacement ready? That’s a blow to young people. A program of that size, which has made a massive impact, shouldn’t just be scrapped with the hope that something better is on the way. Where’s the plan? Our youth are expected to wait how long for the new 'NCS'? That leads me to my burning questions: ❓ How much power will young people really have in this “co-design” approach? Are we talking real influence or just a tick-box exercise for a photo op? If the goal is to improve youth services that have failed in the past, there needs to be a real power structure behind this—one that shares learning and influence. ❓ Will young people be compensated for their contributions? Are we just asking them to show up, give their time, ideas, and energy — without fair pay for their expertise? This can’t be another case of “do the work for free.” Their time and ideas deserve value. ❓ Will this Advisory Board actually reflect the diversity of our youth? We can’t overlook the fact that young people come from all walks of life — different backgrounds, cultures, and identities. This board has to truly represent those it's being built to serve. Anything less misses the mark. 💭 The question I’m left pondering with: Is this a real move towards lasting change? Or another political headline that fizzles out when the going gets tough? https://lnkd.in/dR8Gvjaj #YouthVoice #YouthEmpowerment #CoDesign #SystemsChange #InclusiveLeadership #PolicyChange #PowerOfYouth #SocialImpact #PowerSharing

At the Foyer Federation, we welcome the government's decision to develop a National Youth Strategy with young people's views at its heart. In their announcement, Lisa Nandy hit the nail on the head: 'For too long, the nation's young people have been deprived of a meaningful seat at the table in the decisions that directly impact their lives.' Across the youth supported housing sector and the wider youth sector, we know the importance of holding space for young people's views and, in recent years we have prioritised listening to young people and rebalancing power within supported accommodation (see our Youth Power Fund impact report here https://lnkd.in/ewVwpbA9). Foyers are, at their very core, strengths-based organisations, with deeply embedded Advantaged Thinking mindsets, and one of our biggest strengths is the lived experience of the young people we serve. But without this top-level buy-in, our vision of seeing all young people who can't live at home realising their power and purpose in life can't happen - so the commitment from the government to co-produce this national strategy with the young people it affects offers genuine hope, not just for the Foyer Federation, but for the sector and for young people across the board. There is serious work to be done - the resource required to deliver on any meaningful national strategy should not be under-estimated. There are challenges ahead but we'll be paying very close attention and taking every opportunity for young people who can't live at home to input. In the coming weeks, we'll also be launching our next organisational strategy, with ambitious plans to amplify the voices of young people and Foyers. The views of young people and the organisations that serve them have never been more relevant and it's our mission to make them heard. https://lnkd.in/eCZHvNEb
