Political leadership, industry support, and good old fashion market demand are each critical constituencies to effectively address our existing environmental challenges, so I find this as welcome news.

🎄 ☃️ December is here! In the run-up to the Christmas season, many share their book recommendations for the holiday period. 📚 Here are my top reads if you want a nice little break from work (not really): - ISO 20400 - the ISO - International Organization for Standardization guidance for sustainable procurement. A great guide for organizations of all sizes on how to integrate sustainability within procurement, and how to ensure all buyers and procurement managers can apply the organization’s overall sustainability strategy. - ISO 14004 - An oft forgotten part of the ISO 14000 franchise, providing guidance as to how to implement the well-known superstar of the franchise, the ISO 14001. - ISO 26000 - Sustainable development is not all about the environment, it also includes social responsibility. This is also covered by ISO 20400 for procurement specifically, but ISO 26000 offers a broader look and a deep understanding of principles and core subjects. - The Science Based Target Setting Manual - More and more businesses, like Hilti, are signing up to the Science Based Targets initiative. Close to 10,000 companies are working towards drastic reductions of carbon reductions. This marks a change from a carbon-neutral approach (don’t reduce your emissions, just offset them), to the more ambitious and more impactful net-zero targets - SBTi sector specific guides - The Science Based Targets initiative also offers guidance specific to a variety of sectors, from Steel and Cement, to Apparel and Aviation. Pick the one that is relevant to you. I hope you enjoy this very festive list (I know), and I wish all of you a great holiday season. 🎅

The Power of Conscious Choices ⭐️ As the shopping season approaches, it is more important than ever to be mindful of where our purchases originate. Understanding material traceability allows brands to educate consumers to make informed decisions, ensuring that purchasing habits support ethical sourcing, sustainable practices, and responsible production. Transparency builds brand loyalty. This season, we choose to prioritize traceable materials. 🧬 To learn more about our process, visit https://lnkd.in/e8UHNNRq.

If you're a brand selling packaged goods into California, Oregon, and Colorado, make sure that you're registered with the Circular Action Alliance by July 1st -- it's fast approaching! As Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws for packaging continue their implementation, this is the most important step you can take right now to make sure you're in the loop on what you need to do to comply. Check out the video below for a deeper dive. #epr #circulareconomy #recycling #policy #packaging #sustainablepackaging
If your brand sells products in California and you rely on packaging to get your brand to your customers, it is highly likely that you will be impacted by the "Extended Producer Responsibility--EPR" legislation SB54 that was passed in June of 2022, also called the Packaging Producer Responsibility Act. Please take a minute to hear from Caroline DeLoach, who is our head of sustainability at Atlantic Packaging and A New Earth Project as she discusses the upcoming deadline to register for the Producer Responsibility Organization managed by Circular Action Alliance under the direction of CalRecycle #wedothistogether

INDUSTRY NETWORKING: People Who Changed My Life Who have you met that changed your life, your career, even your very being? I met my list at AAPN events. For example: Rick Horwitch of Bureau Veritas Group has beat the sustainability drum for 14 years, ever since taking the lead at our Sustainability Summit in 2010. He has never hesitated to serve on panels, to moderate them and in one case to invent the terrific AAPN Genius Panel of former AAPN presidents and chairmen in 2018. (Shown in the photo.). Rick led one of the five supply chain breakout sessions at our AAPN Executive Forum in Cancun in 2013. He is very widely connected within the industry, and remains an important member of AAFA’s Board of Directors. He was one of five AAPN members who called on AAPN member Walmart as an entire supply chain (also shown in the photo). In fact, Rick leads our commitment to Walmart’s Made in USA initiative today. Logging up to 300,000 miles a year, Rick is one of our most global members. We have met him in events all over the world. In fact, in 2015 on our visit to Shanghai, Rick arranged for us to tour Bureau Veritas’ massive testing lab there. The Change? Rick grew up on the factory floor of his parent’s apparel production facility. He knows operations. More importantly, he knows so many people and has taken the lead in networking us with them all over the world. Rick is a selfless committed leader in our world. #ProAmericas #AmericasTextiles #WesternHemisphere #Fibers #Yarns #Fabrics #SewnProducts #Apparel #Fashion #Knitting #Weaving #Sustainability #ApparelIQ #SupplyChain #Reshoring #Nearshoring #WesternHemisphere #CAFTADR #USMCA

On World Creativity and Innovation Day, we took a moment to celebrate our journey in revolutionizing the packaging coating landscape with our BPA-free developments. 💡 - In May 2023, we introduced Accelshield™ 700 – our groundbreaking internal BPX-Ni coating designed specifically for can ends. This innovative coating is compatible with a wide range of beverages, including those with high acidity or requiring high-temperature sterilization processes like yoghurt drinks, milk, and coffee. - In November 2023, we proudly unveiled Accelstyle™️ 100 and 200, our external waterborne gloss and matte overprint varnishes (OPVs) for can bodies. Not only are these coatings free from bisphenols, but they also steer clear of styrene and PFAS, addressing additional environmental concerns. What's next? 🤔 We're excited to announce that several other new coatings are currently undergoing rigorous testing, with anticipated approvals on the horizon! To dive deeper into our latest developments, check out our newest article and stay tuned for what's next: https://lnkd.in/d6JxN-pt #AkzoNobel #PackagingCoatings #MetalCoatings #WorldCreativityAndInnovationDay #Innovation #CoatingInnovation #BPAFree #LeadingSupplier
