The ageing and poorly maintained water infrastructure in KwaZulu-Natal has led to frequent supply interruptions and quality issues, leaving industrial companies struggling to mitigate these water risks. While companies are responding individually, many of these challenges are beyond their control. A more collaborative, catchment-wide approach is needed to build resilience among all stakeholders, says Tamaryn Hale Pr. Sci. Nat Reg. EAP (EAPASA), a principal environmental scientist at SRK Consulting’s Durban practice. The water stewardship framework developed by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) offers a collaborative model that considers not just a company's on-site conditions but the broader water challenges in the entire catchment area. This holistic, multi-stakeholder approach is crucial to effectively addressing the complex water-related issues facing industrial companies in the region. Why is the new National Water Policy still kept under carpets? It has been submitted by the drafting Committee, chaired by Prof Mihir Shah, four years ago. By shelving the draft, India is being made bereft of moving towards a “new water governance paradigm”. What is expected from the new National Water Policy? I am thrilled to share my recent thought leadership piece, published in the Daily Maverick! In South Africa, water conservation is a pressing concern, with forecasts predicting a deficit of 17% by 2030. In the article, I delve into how the private sector can significantly contribute to the country's ambitious goals of enhancing water quality, leak detection, infrastructure management, and more by 2040. With 60% of rivers overexploited and 40% of wastewater untreated, urgent action is needed. By leveraging advanced digital technologies and advocating for robust legislative reforms, we can lay the foundation for sustainable water practices. Through public-private partnerships, investment in innovative technologies, and strategic collaborations, we can create a dynamic ecosystem that fosters water resilience and supports economic growth. To achieve this vision, it's essential to implement legislation that promotes community participation, strategic investments, and stronger enforcement mechanisms. Furthermore, incentives for water conservation and educational programs are vital for long-term sustainability. By working together across sectors and embracing innovative solutions, we can address water scarcity and ensure a brighter, water-secure future for South Africa. #water #waterconservation #wastewater Follow the link to access the full article for more insights: https://lnkd.in/gEJXm_cn

I’m not sure how I feel about setting an “internal price” for #water. An internal price is a price that more accurately reflects the value of a gallon of water to the organization as opposed to the price paid for that gallon of water. Everyone knows that #water is not priced correctly and should be much more expensive. An internal price helps water conservation projects get over the finish line because it shortens payback on the investment. However, TRUE economic viability determines the success or failure of a movement over the long term. This may be a dangerous practice that leads to credibility concerns. I would hate for decision makers to question the true viability of a Capture H2O water conservation project because of past credibility concerns. I welcome your thoughts. https://lnkd.in/guiSsZM3 Watermarq #sustainability Will Sarni
