Thank you SSR Mining Inc. for hosting this event.
I am so proud and excited for this new chapter. You rock @women in mining, black hills! And I LOVE your logo!
New chapters are so important in making a real impact and bring change to local communities, the mining industry, and our society. They are right there to advance Women in Mining USA commitments of:
1) EDUCATION: We educate to change misconceptions of the extractive industries.
2) ADVOCACY: We advocate for a more diverse, equitable and inclusive industry.
3) EMPOWERMENT: We empower members through professional development and networking.
4) INSPIRATION: We inspire future generations of mining professionals.
In case you were not aware… WIM is an inclusive organization, you don’t need to be female to help andvance the commitments. Everyone with passion is WELCOME!
Check out this article, published by NIOSH, on some of the unique challenges women face in the mining industry. Looking forward to more research on this important topic.

Women have played a critical role in the global mining industry throughout history. Over the last 20 years, while the industry has focused efforts on recruiting and retaining women, the number of women in mining has remained roughly the same. Very interesting research on occupation health and employment concerns for women in the mining industry. Many of these factors, including maternity leave and childcare benefits, greatly affect women involvement in the industry. It's great to see research and developments made to diversify and improve access for women and families in these areas.

on the fence about which is the lesser of the 2 evils...
but it is really the consumer driving the demand regardless of which solution you choose...
without the mining industry there is no choice...
what we really need to be focusing on is more sustainable natural resourcing...

As I prepare for today’s panel discussion, I’m reflecting on the role of strategic foresight and future thinking. It’s not about predicting the future, but about being ready with the right tools and strategies to adapt to changes. In today’s mining industry, this forward-thinking approach is more important than ever.

ENVISION THIS 21st CENTURY SCENARIO…
Two major critical minerals mines operating hand-in-hand with a state-of-the-art carbon capture and storage facility, all situated within the bounds of a single contiguous property. Together, they create a combined carbon-neutral emissions footprint, fully supported by a unified infrastructure.
BC Mining Properties firmly believes that such possibilities are not only conceivable but achievable within the realm of the MAC Property.

I had the pleasure of exchanging insights with Arnaud Douville and F. Nicanor Berola in Buenos Aires, discussing critical mineral projects for energy transition. The event brought together partners and associates of leading law firms, investors, government officials, and academics from the region.
South America has long been a major exporter of minerals, but the conversation has shifted: How can we mitigate environmental risks during this mining rush while capitalizing on investment opportunities and staying competitive? What lessons can we learn from other countries in the region to address common challenges?
💡 ESG-Focused Investments: Investors are increasingly focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, reshaping mining’s future. I recall a project that took 20 years, involving road construction through the Amazon. These same minerals are critical to environmental protection, but such projects are losing appeal for ESG-conscious investors.
🔋 New Technologies: In Brazil, BIM, digital twins, and IoT are enhancing project sustainability. With around 20 research centers, we’re seeing progress in safe decommissioning and water use reduction, addressing key industry challenges. These technologies are expected to gradually lower extraction costs and improve sustainability, though more investment is needed to fully realize their potential.
📜 Regulatory Progress: While improvement is needed, Brazil has made strides in regulation over the past decades. The creation of agencies and long-term policies has attracted foreign investments in strategic (and now successful) sectors like renewable energy. With the Brazilian National Mining Agency gaining relevance, there is optimism for a mining sector that combines resource management with technological innovation. However, effective coordination between federal and state agencies remains crucial.
🔋 Synergy Between Mining and Renewable Energy: Brazil’s mining sector, a major consumer of clean energy, is driving renewable growth. Regulations on remote energy generation are key to this synergy. Battery and solar panel manufacturers are seeking stable mineral supplies via offtake agreements or direct investment.
🤝 Nearshoring: South America has a unique opportunity through friendshoring to strengthen its role in global supply chains. To seize these opportunities, it’s crucial to align diplomatic policies, strengthen international cooperation, and establish strategic partnerships. We have the resources and the capacity, but success will ultimately depend on stability and the adoption of long-term public policies hat promote both investor confidence and sustainability.
