Did you know, sepsis is the most common, least-recognized, most preventable cause of death worldwide? A medical emergency caused when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs, sepsis claims a life every 2.8 seconds. This World Sepsis Day, we celebrate two tireless scientists–and Angels Den finalists–who may be on the cusp of reversing its deadly toll. St. Michael's Hospital's critical care clinician-scientist Dr. Claudia DosSantos and postdoctoral fellow Dr. Amin Ektesabi. PhD have developed a new treatment to block inflammation, supercharge the white blood cells’ ability to kill bacteria, and protect against heart and lung failure. Now they want to test it in pre-clinical trials–so they can move quickly to save lives. #WorldSepsisDay #SepsisPrevention #AngelsDen #Research #Healthcare #Sepsis Unity Health Toronto

#CaseOfTheDay : #VoteTheCorrectReaponse : A 35-year-old male presents to the emergency department with a rapidly progressive ascending symmetric flaccid paralysis requiring mechanical ventilation. One week ago, he experienced a mild respiratory infection. On examination, he is afebrile, has 3/5 motor strenth in his extremities and reveal decreased reflexes in the lower extremities. A lumbar puncture yields clear, colourless cerebrospinal fluid under normal pressure. The CSF report reveals albuminocytologic dissociation(= increased protein levels with normal leukocyte count < 10 cells/mcL in CSF). Question: Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis? A. Multiple Sclerosis B. Guillain-Barré Syndrome C. Myasthenia Gravis D. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) E. Poliomyelitis

Sepsis kills more people than heart attacks and stroke combined and yet we have no dedicated in-hospital sepsis response teams. MI and stroke patients have a dedicated team that arrive at their bedside within minutes and sepsis does not. Also in need of out patient sepsis clinics that GP's can refer patients on to that are at higher risk of developing sepsis for closer monitoring. Time to invest in sepsis if we want to see results. #sepsis #prevention #notrocketscience #realaction #resources
