Last Monday, I had the absolute pleasure of joining the The Open University community to dive into all things Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) and ADHD. It was an amazing evening, full of thoughtful questions, shared experiences, and a wonderful energy! Talking with the Open University (OU) Disabled Students Group about the challenges and strategies around navigating the Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA) reminded me exactly why I love what I do. I know that DSA can sometimes feel overwhelming—like a maze of forms, requirements, and stresses. The aim of the session was to bring clarity to that process and to share the tools that have helped countless students and professionals to access all that the DSA can offer. Everyone was so engaged, the session overran as so many questions were being asked and experiences shared. That openness and willingness to connect and share knowledge was key to creating such a supportive environment for the Open University Disabled Students Group. Together, we were navigating the trials of DSA and making things clearer for everyone. To everyone who attended, thank you for bringing such a spirit of curiosity and support. If you are an OU student and weren't able to attend, don’t worry it was recorded, and you can still send any questions my way through the Open University Disabled Students Group Chair, Clare Charlton. If you’d like to know more about Diverse Learners and the work we do supporting disabled students in Higher Education please message me or comment below. #DisabledStudentsAllowances #DSA #ADHDSupport #HigherEducation #TheOpenUniversity #AccessibilityInEducation #DiverseLearners #InclusiveEducation #DSAGuidance #LearningSupport #StudentSupport #AccessibilityMatters #DisabilityAwareness Image description: Light blue and yellow background graphic split halfway down vertically. Kerry presents studies in a fun and engaging way, loves the Open University dearly and wants to share her tools, stories, stresses and how to navigate the trials of DSA.'

Students with disabilities got the right to education in higher education long back. But, Many colleges and education systems are still not structured with disabled students in mind. However, Prior research has found students with disabilities prefer online learning. Inside Higher Ed’s 2024 Student Voice survey, conducted by Generation Lab, found among students with a physical disability, 30% preferred online asynchronous courses. Those with a learning disability preferred in-person or blended coursework. Online education, when designed well, has the potential to promote access for students with disabilities as well as achievement and completion for these learners. An accessible institution should focus on holistic student support to provide learners with equitable agency, academic engagement and overall experience. From article: "A recently published white paper by the Center for Higher Education Policy and Practice at Southern New Hampshire University (CHEPP) highlights obstacles in online education for students with disabilities and some of the ways institutions can aid disabled students’ educational pursuits." and "Enhancing access: The report pulls from interviews with practitioners, students and advocates as well as the available literature to offer six key elements of accessible online education. Transparent availability of resources and access to the disability office. Universal design for learning principles embedded throughout course and program design and delivery. Centralized systems and consistent use of technology across departments. Continuous improvement processes and feedback channels. An institutional accessibility committee and governance policies. Regular engagement of faculty and student services professionals."
