Students with disabilities got the right to education in higher education long back. But, Many colleges and education systems are still not structured with disabled students in mind. However, Prior research has found students with disabilities prefer online learning. Inside Higher Ed’s 2024 Student Voice survey, conducted by Generation Lab, found among students with a physical disability, 30% preferred online asynchronous courses. Those with a learning disability preferred in-person or blended coursework. Online education, when designed well, has the potential to promote access for students with disabilities as well as achievement and completion for these learners. An accessible institution should focus on holistic student support to provide learners with equitable agency, academic engagement and overall experience. At the same time the slow recovery from COVID is being called out for LD students, the number of students with learning disabilities continues to increase. The authors call out the need to make a range of learning options available to meet student needs and improve learner outcomes. "Prioritizing accessibility. By designing school schedules to accommodate tutoring and targeted small group instruction for all students who need the support, schools could reduce the stigma associated with the extra attention..." What is special education Special education is a tailored instructional program designed to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities or special needs. These students may face challenges that impact their ability to learn in a traditional classroom environment, such as cognitive, physical, emotional, or developmental disabilities. Special education services provide these students with access to specialized teaching methods, tools, and resources that support their academic, social, and emotional growth. Some key features of special education include: 1.Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): Every student receiving special education has an IEP, which is a customized learning plan that sets specific goals and outlines the services and accommodations they will receive. 2.Accommodations and Modifications: Special education often includes changes in the way instruction is delivered or assessed to help students succeed.
