⚗ Revolutionizing cryogels! Our new biotech approach creates water vapor-resistant cryogels with improved integrity. Our research presents a novel biotech method to create water vapor-resistant cryogels with improved integrity. We successfully transformed rice straw into nanofibrils and used live cells to deposit PHA particles within the cryogel pores. This innovative approach resulted in a 6-fold decrease in water sorption capacity while preserving cryogel density and elasticity. Excited to share my fifth and final first-author publication from my Ph.D. with Prof. Ramon Gonzalez, recently published in Bioresource Technology! In this study, we explored synthetic metabolic pathways for the use of methylsuccinate —a key precursor from the anaerobic activation of methane via fumarate addition. Through a combinatorial approach of enzyme mining and adaptive laboratory evolution, we engineered multiple E. coli strains growing efficiently on methylsuccinate. In addition, a novel electron transfer pathway involving heterologous flavoproteins and quinone oxidoreductase was elucidated. We hope this engineered strain will serve as a stepping stone toward synthetic methanotrophy, advancing biomanufacturing using methane as a sustainable feedstock.
