A 3 meter wide #bicycle lane (9.8 feet) - each way! - sounds gloriously spacious. It's sized to accommodate an increase in the number of cyclists. As you can see in this video, it also allows for side by side riding. Too many of Seattle's bike lanes are door zone #sharrows or gutter bike lanes - with no protection, and no futureproofing and capacity for increased usage, or allowing parents to ride side by side with their kiddos. Seattle has had 6 people die on our roads in just the last week. We can no longer afford to be complacent to the growing crisis of road safety. We need brave and visionary #leadership - like Anne Hidalgo, like Valérie Plante, like Matúš Vallo - who will prioritize #climateaction, #safestreets, and #publichealth. All topics foundational to my forthcoming book. Unfortunately, no one seems willing to step up here. Why is there a dearth of leadership in the US on these issues? #citiesforpeople #stadtplanung #bikes #urbanplanning #mobility #verkehrswende #sustainablemobility
Fortune favours the brave, and Bratislava Mayor Matúš Vallo deserves immense credit for this reallocation of road space on Vajanské nábreží. A pair of car lanes were converted into a pair of three metre wide cycle lanes; forming a key missing piece in the city’s burgeoning network.

Only a few days to the opening of our our next special exhibition: 200 years of Reederei F. Laeisz On deck2 of the museum from March the 21st to September the 15th 2024. It all began in Hamburg in 1824 with a business selling top hats. Within a few decades, this became one of the most important and today oldest shipping companies in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. The House of F. Laeisz soon maintained shipping connections all over the world and was involved in the founding of other well-known shipping companies, including Hamburg Süd and Hapag. The company became well known for its Flying-P-Liners, fast sailing ships that were famous and admired until the 1930s, especially on the wheat voyage to Australia and the route around Cape Horn to the west coast of South America. Later, the shipping company entered the trade in bananas and other refrigerated cargoes. Today, F. Laeisz is fully focussed on the future. Large car ferries, bulkers and gas tankers characterise the fleet. Liquefied gas transport is becoming increasingly important, as are modern dual-fuel drives and the reduction of CO2 emissions for new generations of ships. The company is certain that the future will belong to chemicals such as green methanol and green ammonia as fuels for large ocean-going vessels. #maritime #history #museum #hamburg

✈️ The Government of Portugal 🇵🇹 announced this week the decision to build the new Lisbon #airport in #Alcochete (25 miles / 40 km East of Lisbon), thus accepting the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission - maintaining temporarily the current Humberto Delgado airport. The new airport will be called "Luís de Camões" - in honor of the great 16th century Portuguese poet and author of "The Lusiads" -, will cost around 6.1 billion euros and should be ready in 2034. As the Minister of #Infrastructure and Housing Miguel Pinto Luz explained, the #Government expects this project to be completed within 10 to 15 years: "With the knowledge we have today, we believe that it is not possible to complete this work in seven years, so our deadline is 2034". What justifies the option for Alcochete is the · #proximity to the center of #Lisbon; · location on entirely #public land; · favorable #environmental impact study; · proximity of the main #roads and #railways; and · possibility that this location offers of an #expansion beyond the two runways initially planned, especially when it is anticipated that Lisbon's air demand in 2050 will be around #triple what it is today, meaning that the region will be handling more than 100 million #passengers per year, by that time 👫👭👬 This is a significant step towards #improving Lisbon's airport infrastructure and facilitating economic growth and connectivity in the region 📈💪 You can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gMWyqJ4n #NewAirport
