In just a few years, the EU will make Digital Product Passports (DPP) mandatory across industries. These digital records will track a product’s entire lifecycle—from materials used, to environmental impact, to how to dispose of it responsibly. Accessible via QR codes or barcodes, this info will empower EU consumers to make more sustainable purchasing decisions. Why does this matter? The EU is driving towards a circular economy, where products and materials stay in the economy for as long as possible, reducing waste and preserving natural resources. For businesses, implementing DPPs will not only ensure compliance with the new regulations, but also help build transparency and consumer trust. After all, 69% of consumers want more transparency from brands (Forrester). Key Benefits of DPPs for Consumers & Businesses: ▪️Empowers consumers with detailed, transparent product info (e.g., materials, carbon footprint, recyclability). ▪️Supports the circular economy by reducing waste and keeping products in the economic loop longer. ▪️Helps businesses comply with EU regulations by providing an easy way to manage product lifecycle data. ▪️Builds consumer trust through transparency, aligning with growing demand for eco-friendly practices. ⚡ How can PIM help? A Product Information Management system is key to managing DPPs effectively. By centralizing all product data — materials, environmental impact, lifecycle details, and disposal info — PIM ensures accuracy, consistency, and quick updates across your product range. This helps businesses stay on top of regulatory deadlines while enhancing sustainability efforts. With a PIM system, companies can streamline processes, improve supply chain visibility, and foster stronger consumer loyalty, all while standing out as leaders in sustainability. It’s a win for businesses, consumers, and the planet. Have questions about DPP or how a PIM system can help? 2025 Is the Year to Implement Digital Product Passports (DPPs) The clock is ticking for brands to embrace Digital Product Passports (DPPs). 2025 is an important year for DPP adoption. Here are five reasons why you need to act now: ✅ EU Regulations The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) mandates the adoption of DPPs. Brands need toprepare to comply with these regulations to continue operating in the EU market. All goods sold in the EU from 1st of January 2028 need to have a DPP, no matter if your brand is from the US or Australia or other non EU country. ✅ Consumers Demand Transparency 88% of consumers want brands to help them be more environmentally friendly by sharing information on product sourcing, production processes, and sustainability efforts. Source: Cone Communications, 2021. Consumers are eager for more information from DPPs, including product origin, authenticity, and sustainability credentials. This can build brand loyalty and trust. ✅ Competitive Advantage Early adoption of DPPs positions brands as industry leaders in transparency and sustainability, differentiating them from competitors and appealing to environmentally conscious customers. ✅ Streamlined Operations and Increased Efficiency Implementing DPPs can create better partnerships and streamline supply chain management by giving detailed product information, leading to improved traceability and control and eventually reduce errors and waste. ✅ Facilitation of Circular Economy DPPs enable better tracking of product lifecycles, supporting repairs, recycling and reuse that’s essential for moving towards a circular economy. This aligns with global sustainability goals and can open new revenue streams. Waiting to implement DPPs could result in non-compliance, loss of consumer trust, missed market opportunities and loss of revenue. Acting now doesn’t have to be that complicated - you just need a good tech partner to support you in this journey. Are All Your Departments Ready for the Digital Passport Transformation? 🌍 Digital Product Passports (DPPs) will shake up the fashion industry (good or bad - that’s a discussion for another post...) DPPs are meant to show transparency on everything from where materials are sourced, to how the products should be cared for and where garments can be recycled. Hopefully they’re gonna be ideal in building trust with consumers—but here’s a question: Is your whole brand organization ready for this change? Let's break it down: 1️⃣ Brand Leadership and Business Development: Is the leadership team educated on the what, why and how of DPPs? Are they aware of the organizational and monetary needs? 2️⃣ Design & Product Development: Are your design and product development teams getting all the information needed, like where materials are coming from and how the products are made? Does your supply chain team have the tools to get this info into the DPP system? 3️⃣ Marketing & Customer Service: Can your marketing team clearly explain the benefits of DPPs to your customers? Is your customer service team ready to support consumers on how to use the digital passports— understanding what the data means? 4️⃣ IT & Tech Support: Does your tech team have the right software to support DPPs to make sure everything runs smoothly? Stats say that 73% of fashion leaders believe tech like DPPs will define the future of the industry, only 34% of brands have a framework to implement it in all departments (Source: McKinsey, 2022). That’s a pretty big gap! Before jumping into DPPs, make sure every department—from design/product development to IT—knows what’s expected of them. How are you preparing your teams? Is everyone on the same page about what it means and is required? Let me know in the comments! What is a Digital Product Passport? Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are innovative tools aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and production. They offer detailed information about a product's entire lifecycle, including manufacturing processes, materials used, environmental impact, and recycling guidelines. Here is key points: What is a Digital Product Passport? 🌏 A DPP acts as a digital identity for a product, encompassing vital information from its inception to its end-of-life care. 🌏Technologies such as QR codes facilitate access to this data upon scanning. 🌏DPPs have found application in sectors like electronics and fashion. Current Legislation: - Loi AGEC Decree 2022-748 (France): Requires the disclosure of environmental information for certain products in the French market to consumers, accessible electronically at the point of sale via a digital product sheet or DPP. - EU Regulation (2026-2030): DPPs are expected to be implemented by the EU starting in 2024, with a mandate spanning 2026 to 2030, affecting all 27 EU member states across various product categories. Industry Adoption: 🌏Companies, including high-end brands, are beginning to assign digital passports to their products in response to new EU regulations that encourage sustainability and circular economy practices. 🌏Industrial and electric vehicle batteries are slated to be the first products required to have DPPs by 2027. In conclusion, DPPs are pivotal in fostering sustainable consumption and enabling consumers to make informed decisions. With evolving regulations, an increasing number of products will incorporate this system, aiding in the pursuit of a more sustainable future. TULIP SUSTAINABILITY CENTER İKLİMKARBON #DPP #ESPR
