Recycling has been our core business since we started back in 1939. But the kind of waste that society generated in the past is not the same as today. New products are constantly being developed, and we need to constantly develop new and innovative ways to recycle complex materials. This is what Samira Akbari does. She works as Material and Analysis expert in our recycling lab at the Stena Nordic Recycling Center, one of the largest recycling facilities in northern Europe. https://lnkd.in/dinRJF5q

Following Defra's guidance update on Simpler Recycling, Gavin Graveson, Veolia UK CEO said: "We welcome the Government’s further guidance on Simpler Recycling. It’s a common sense approach that gives operators flexibility to deliver the right services to customers across England. For local authorities, we look forward to supporting them with the best collection services for their residents which will help raise stagnant recycling rates. For businesses, the change is significant and the timelines are short. These changes come into effect in just a few months and yet today’s guidance is still heavily caveated by the next spending review and limited parliamentary time for the secondary legislation to pass. The Government needs to provide certainty here so implementation can be successful." Read the full update here: https://ow.ly/8QFC50Uj9EA

It’s great to see a much needed update on #SimplerRecycling, providing at least some clarity that Dry Mixed #Recycling, in as near its current form as possible, can continue to exist where appropriate and justifiable. This aspect has been a particular concern for our customers who are space poor, operate difficult to manage public spaces where source segregation can be challenging, or already utilise sophisticated backhauling solutions for target materials. While we await further detail on the timescales permitted, the likelihood of a “soft” launch of the regulation, or further concessions, Veolia UK will continue to support customers by ensuring their preparedness for the range of possible scenarios, and by staying close to #Defra through our dedicated Policy team.

We know a lot of work still needs to be done with respect to waste management and recycling globally, but it is so encouraging when you see progress being made. Take Sweden, for example. Not only do they recycle 47% of their waste, but they convert 52% into energy! That's 1% shy of diverting ALL their waste from landfills. Get a glimpse into the recycling system that Sweden has set in place here: https://lnkd.in/ewkSbsy3.
