Writing and teaching about data visualization. A data viz newsletter you'll actually read.

I'm still seeing large, well-known corporations using stoplight color schemes in their data dashboards. Even when I say that's inaccessible, they tell me it's so entrenched in their company culture that they can't address it (yet). Even though it violated the Americans with Disabilities Act! Let me show you ways to increase the accessibility of your data. https://lnkd.in/g62BS8fP #dataviz #datadashboard

Wonderful reminder, Stephanie Evergreen! Up to approximately 8% of men (including me ☺️) have some form of colorblindness, and about 0.5% of women are affected. Red-green color blindness is the most common. The practical outcome for me is that I can't readily distinguish blue from purple (I can't see the red in the purple) and tan from green. Color-coded maps can also be a nightmare for me. Thank you for this!

I teach courses in Excel, Power BI and data visualisation. In Power BI especially, Microsoft has built in several accessible colour themes but their "Good/Bad" colours (as used in KPI visuals) are still red and green. I like to switch to red/blue. Also, there are several different forms of colour vision impairment, so I suggest my learners actively find out if they are working with anybody with these issues, and give them a say in choosing the colour palette.
