The crisis of gender-based violence is urgent. There is #NoExcuse for violence against women and girls! Violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains a global crisis, with one in three women experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Economic crises, conflicts, and climate change exacerbate the issue, especially for marginalized women. While progress has been made through laws and policies, weak enforcement and social norms continue to hinder progress. The good news is VAWG is preventable. Comprehensive, survivor-centered approaches, supported by dedicated funding and feminist movements, are key to eliminating VAWG. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, now is the time for action to end impunity and prevent violence against women and girls. #16daysofactivism #GBV #Womenshealth #women #girls #femicide #fgm #humanrights #womenrights #sdgs UN Women https://lnkd.in/eX3p53VN

Violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally, almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life. For at least 51,100 women in 2023, the cycle of gender-based violence ended with one final and brutal act—their murder by partners and family members. 🚩That means a woman was killed every 10 minutes. This scourge has intensified in different settings, including the workplace and online spaces, and has been exacerbated by conflicts, and climate change. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it. What is considered violence against women?? It can manifest in physical, sexual and psychological forms, encompassing: 🔴intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide); 🔴sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber- harassment); 🔴human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation); 🔴female genital mutilation; and 🔴child marriage. Violence against women continues to be an obstacle to achieving equality, development, peace as well as to the fulfillment of women and girls’ human rights!! The solution lies in robust responses, holding perpetrators accountable, and accelerating action through well-resourced national strategies and increased funding to women’s rights movements. #internationaldayfortheeliminationofviolenceagainstwomen #NoExcuse #investinprevention #endimpunity #hearmetoo

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀, 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 1/3 women worldwide will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In conflict zones, the number increases to 7/10. This is the brutal reality faced by millions of women and girls every day. Gender-based violence is a systemic crisis that works in silence. Women and girls around the world face daily threats—from domestic abuse and sexual assault to trafficking and exploitation in conflict zones. Survivors of violence often have no recourse for justice and are left to suffer in isolation. The impact of this violence is far-reaching: shattered lives, broken communities, and generations of women denied their rights to safety, dignity, and opportunity. This is a crisis that transcends borders, cultures, and socioeconomic status. The United Nations #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence is a reminder that we can no longer turn a blind eye. It’s time for real action—policy change, stronger protections, and a global commitment to ending the abuse. We must stop tolerating the violence that destroys the lives of so many women and girls. #16DaysofActivismagainstGenderBasedViolence: 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 In April 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown in Nigeria, a 22-year-old man was arrested by the police for hacking his wife’s (also 22 years old) hand off. Her offence - disobeying his order not to attend the marriage ceremony of her relative in her parent’s home (https://lnkd.in/eyH4dYWF). This is not just one statistic. Globally, the data tells an even more sobering story: 🔶 Every 10 minutes in 2023, a woman or girl was intentionally killed by a partner or family member. 🔶51,100 women and girls were murdered by intimate partners or family members 🔶140 women are killed daily within their own families 🔶1 in 4 adolescent girls have been abused by partners 🔶15 million adolescent girls (15-19 years) experience forced sexual acts 🔶Nearly 1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime 🔶60% of female homicides are committed by partners or family members. The painful reality: Over 60% of countries lack comprehensive rape laws, and only 14% of women live in countries with robust legal protections for their fundamental human rights. The consequence: Less than 40% of women experiencing violence seek help, and fewer than 10% report to the police. The crisis of gender-based violence is urgent. There is #NoExcuse for violence against women and girls. Violence against women and girls can and must be prevented. Today, as we mark the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀, let us break the silence and #endViolenceAgainstWomenandGirls NOW. #NoExcuse: How can you act NOW? 1. Raise awareness: Challenge normalized violence. Educate communities. Amplify survivor voices. 2. Demand Accountability: Push for legal consequences. End impunity by establishing zero tolerance and holding perpetrators accountable. 3. Influence Policy: Speak up in spaces and places where national priorities are being discussed. Push for the adoption, implementation and adequate funding of National Action Plans addressing gender-based violence. 4. Support Prevention: Invest in women’s rights organizations and survivor support services. The crisis of gender-based violence is urgent. There is #NoExcuse for violence against women and girls. The 16 Days of Activism #UNiTE campaign starts today & is an opportunity to revitalize commitments, call for accountability and action from decision-makers. The latest report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UN Women shows that femicide is rising around the world. While there has been growing awareness and public outcry against these killings, much more needs to be done to prevent violence against women, stop its escalation, provide adequate services to survivors and punish perpetrators.
