🎤 A couple of weeks ago, I found myself speaking on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, ostensibly there to discuss the role of a 'socially responsible poet' in Bosnia and Herzegovina. But I never aspired to this role. It was the very essence of Bosnia, post-Yugoslavia and the Balkans that conscripted me into this position. Imagine living in a state where Corruption, Violence, Nationalism, Unemployment, and Poverty are not just a background noise but the main rhythm of everyday life. In such a context, silence is not merely passivity; it is an active endorsement of the prevailing chaos. To be silent is to engage in the affirmation of the status quo. To engage in the affirmation of the status quo is a tacit agreement with the oppressive order of things. Ultimately, at its core, it is an act of supreme cowardice. My upbringing was steeped in a different ethos—fortunately, or unfortunately.
