🌍 Today at our Interregional Meeting In Lithuania, we had the privilege of listening to Milda Paukste, Co-founder at DenimDiaries, discuss a critical issue in the textile industry: waste. 🧵 Milda’s presentation, "Confronting Stains: Why Stained Clothes Are Not in Demand on the Secondary Market and How They End Their Life Cycles," shed light on the harsh realities of textile waste. It's shocking to realize that many textiles, after being collected in containers, end up in places like the Atacama Desert. 👗 The Desierto Vestido project is a powerful example of raising awareness about this issue. It highlights the importance of sensibilization in addressing textile waste. And check if you’re lucky enough to live in an area (like York Region) who runs a program or is in a pilot project for textile recycling, make sure to recycle those textiles that are not donateable! Textile recycling will take anything that’s ripped, torn, or stained (as long as it is not hazardous like gasoline) and many other non-clothes items from shoes and purses, to curtains, sheets, pillows, etc. It’s 100% not a perfect system and likely still has flaws with sending the ~4% of stuff abroad, but in NA, most will either be re-donated (bc it should not have been set in textile recycling to start), or sold to companies who will shred it and repurpose it in industries utilizing insulation and stuffing items that we don’t consider (like internal car door liners).

Waste is a key element of the sustainability crisis we face globally. We overconsume goods and products which are not designed to last and then we dispose of them in response to clever advertising which convinces us we need more/ better goods and products. This video below highlights the problem of waste “ dumping” by western societies in other parts of the world. This practice is deeply unsustainable and needs to end. The SDGs ( SDG 12) call on the global community to embrace sustainable consumption and production . We need to start eliminating the waste we create and to develop Circular Economies which ensure that waste from certain products as the raw materials for others.

As a country who produces tons of garments to raise our GDP this is something we need to think of... Upcoming restrictions or limitations would severely affect the industry yet no recovery plans are visible in the horizon... Perhaps it's the time to establish Per Capita energy consumption demarcation regardless of the geographic/ political boundaries to stop/ minimize these waste? For the rich, I suppose "Polluter Pay" is still good or applicable principle? #fashionindustry #waste #futuretrends #energy

This is definitely something we can do better with. fast fashion is part of the waste epidemic engulfing the planet. This video shows we can be much better at re-use and recycle in textiles. The industry knows it must become more sustainable, we as consumers can lead the way and demand better practices. so much plastic still in retail fashion, from coat hangers and size markers, to clothing itself with polymer fibres, zips and buttons, bags and shop displays. time we as consumers and the industry as a whole made the changes required to reduce waste and reduce plastic.

What really gets to me is that this video is made, or promoted, by the World Economic Forum who create the problem with their unrelenting push for economic growth (more accurately growth of the financial industry). However, these piles of waste do present a starting point for a complete overhaul of the economic system. One that I have laid the foundation for in my latest book.
