🎓 As we gear up to visit universities during Mental Health Awareness Week, it's crucial to remind ourselves of the unseen struggles that our student friends might be facing, especially during exam season. Exams can really pile on the pressure. Deadlines, expectations... It can all feel like too much at times. 😬 You know that friend who always seems upbeat and on top of things? Well, underneath, they might be dealing with exam stress. Not all stress is visible—it's the late-night cramming sessions, self-doubt, and the anxiety that creeps in as deadlines loom closer... 🤗 Let's also remember to check in on those friends who have a heavy course load, are struggling in their classes, or have a disability. They might be facing even more challenges during this time. So, make a little extra effort today and reach out to someone, even if it's just a quick message! 🫶 Your kindness could really brighten their day and make a big difference in how they're feeling. #ExamStress #StudentMentalHealth #UniLife

Mental Health Monday When I have spoken with college counseling centers, they have mentioned that there is usually an uptick in requests for mental health services in October on college campuses. The newness has worn off, the days are getting shorter, and it is getting colder. Check out my previous Mental Health Monday posts for some of the services colleges offer for mental health and see what your college or university offers. If you are just starting the college research process, make sure that checking out each college's mental health services is a part of your process!

A week ago, I couldn't help observe a marked difference in one of my student's countenance and overall bearing; this was through Zoom, in my virtual one-on-one SAT verbal session. When I paused to enquire from my student why I felt there was a discernible change in his persona(and also to validate my own powers of subtle observation, albeit through a screen), he broke down uncontrollably. I wished I were standing by his side to comfort him. Ever since he had lost his mom, he was going through a lot of mental trauma, and depression. He was consulting a counsellor who was helping him to heal and walk through the process. After our rather long heart-to-heart talk, he asked me if it was okay to bare his heart out in the Personal statement, quoting his present mental health status. Having been asked this question for the very first time, in my score plus years of teaching experience, I had no appropriate answer. In fact, read the link below where College Essay Guy, ( Ethan Sawyer)in his series of specific and specialized videos related to the common app essay, addresses this topic. If you want to know what are the common mental health disorders, then read the write up on the second link. Univ of Victoria, Australia has compiled a list of these. https://lnkd.in/dzd_vA2e https://lnkd.in/d9v9YHgq #MentalHealth #CommonAppEssay #CommonAppEssayMentalHealthStatus #CollegeEssayGuy #UniversityOfVictoria #CommonApp #SATTest #ACTTest #PersonalStatementMentalHealth #UniversityOfVictoriaMentalHealth
Should I Discuss Mental Health in My Personal Statement or College Application? (And If So, How)?
