Apart from working on design and development of Sinhala fonts for some of the world's leading tech companies I've been working on standards relating to Sinhala text technologies and standardisation of encoding. Articulating the value of typography and fonts has been a challenge in markets like LK and SA due to reduced buying power. However with the AI revolution the lack of data and text encoded in Unicode will become a real problem in bringing native knowledge to digital space in a meaningful way. I see fonts and related work as primary work in critical digital infrastructure and have been developing frameworks to talk about these topics. After a decade of working in this field I think I should talk to more people and write about our work in these fields to a wider audience. Before I compile more content, I thought it's better to get out what I've done so far. Here is a panel discussion I curated and moderated at ATypI: Association Typographique Internationale Working Seminar Colombo 2019. If you'r interested in localisation, local languages and what the role of fonts in all this, I assure you it's full of insights. Don't mind the cheesy and overblown introductions :) https://lnkd.in/ggNc87Dx
