From Ella Cerón and me: New Yorkers have paid 58% more in food-delivery fees since before a minimum-wage law went into effect in late 2023, according to a city agency report, suggesting that restaurant-delivery services have passed on the bulk of these rising costs to customers. While merchants also paid more fees to food-delivery services offered by Uber, DoorDash and Grubhub, it is customers who are bearing the brunt of the impact. People who placed orders through such apps paid an average of $20.1 million a week in delivery fees during the first quarter of 2024 — a 58% increase from a year prior. By comparison, fees paid by participating restaurants increased 13% over the same period.

Co-op has become the first grocery retailer to promote its aggregator app partnerships in a TV advert, it says, with Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat Takeaway.com all featuring in its new Christmas campaign. The minimalist, text-based ad tells of “just a small gathering” with a rapidly expanding guest list. “Relax”, the ad reads, “we delivery party food in as little as 20 minutes” before showing the branded delivery bags of all three major courier platforms. Ordering dinner from a delivery app is convenient. But at what cost? Fees associated with third-party services, like Uber Eats and Grubhub, have increased significantly — nearly doubling since 2020. Companies say this is due to numerous factors — a big one being delivery costs. Those vary considerably based on demand, driver availability and location. California users, for example, pay a “Driver Benefits Fee.”Uber says these fees help to make orders arrive in a reliable fashion by helping to cover safety programs, 24/7 support and background checks.
