A new general platform for bringing about transformations that normally require excess metallic or chemical reducing agents, photochemical setups involving requisite catalysts or electrochemistry. A new publication from Baran's group now gives the option to remove the redox part from radical couplings by employing stable and usually crystalline Sulfonyl hydrazides as versatile radical precursors as exemplified with seven new C–C bond forming, redox-neutral cross-couplings with (1) activated olefins, (2) alkyl halides, (3) redox active esters, (4) aryl halides, (5) alkenyl halides, (6) alkynyl halides, and (7) trifluoromethylating reagent Besides obviating the need for any external redox-activation, the work highlights the operational simplicity (homogeneous, water tolerant, dump-and-stir) and practicality in terms of scale up of thid new methodology as well as applications to streamline synthesis and carry out late-stage functionalization. https://lnkd.in/gNQWipaJ

Ritter's thianthrenium chemistry goes on (and on) with allenes. The study describes the convenient preparation of a bench stable allenyl thianthrenium salt which can be used in diverse manners which include Suzuki cross couplings but also as a 1,2-bis-electrophile. There is room for improvement, in particularly yieldwise. Nevertheless that's a new reagent to consider for allenylation. We will certainly do in regard of how thianthrenium salts have been successfully incorporated in our reaction toolkit at Spirochem. Congrats to the authors ! The first step in this project was to find a way to synthesize SMA based nanoparticles and investigate the effect of the crosslinker concentration and the initiator concentration on the size, shape and yield of the nanoparticles. We set out to do this in a onepot method simply adding styrene, divibylbenzene and maleic anhydride in a suitable solvent.
