Previous sessions dealt with the carbon neutrality legislative content and the industrial opportunities and threats brought about by the move towards carbon neutrality. The Methanol Institute calls for Pragmatic EU Leadership on the Green Transition in The Parliament Magazine: As Ursula von der Leyen begins her second term as European Commission President, the time for action is now. The bold promises of the Green Deal must be turned into real progress, not just to meet climate targets but to secure Europe’s economic and geopolitical future. Enter the Clean Industrial Deal – an opportunity to fast-track climate technology investments. But success requires a fundamental shift: moving on from outdated, rigid regulations to embrace flexible, technology-neutral policies that drive immediate progress while keeping long-term goals in sight. As Mario Draghi’s report on European competitiveness rightly highlights, one-size-fits-all approaches stifle innovation. Methanol – a proven low-carbon and net-carbon-neutral fuel – demonstrates this. When produced from renewable sources, it can slash emissions by up to 95%. Yet restrictive EU lifecycle criteria often block such solutions, stalling projects and discouraging investment. For hard-to-abate sectors like shipping, aviation, and heavy transport, transitional fuels are essential. The EU must adopt a smarter regulatory framework: adjust thresholds, set phased targets, and expand incentives for low-carbon fuels. This isn’t about lowering standards – it’s about accelerating the path to net-zero through realistic, incremental progress. Europe’s climate ambitions are within reach. By acting now, the new Commission can embrace pragmatic leadership, back transitional solutions like methanol, and deliver a faster, more flexible green transition – for the planet, the economy, and future generations. At COP, government and industry leaders have charted pathways for high-emitting industries to reduce emissions from “hard-to-abate” sectors such as steel and cement. During Technology Day on Transformative Industry, an event co-organized by UN Climate Change’s Technology Executive Committee (TEC) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) highlighted policy and technology innovations that can deliver rapid, impactful emission reductions in heavy industries. https://lnkd.in/dt8jv6NX

Last year it was Oil and Gas Lobbyists, this year it's industrial agriculture and carbon capture lobbyists dominating #COP29. Even from a far, I can tell this is a joke but I'm not laughing, I'm screaming inside! Techno-fixes or the belief in them is going to only exacerbate the 6th mass extinction because they stem from capitalism's BAU and scientists have repeatedly stated that no carbon capture technology exists that can do what these lobbyists are claiming. It's 90% science fiction and 100% a fallacy for the rich to keep polluting, that will make the 1% richer and 99% poorer financially, socially, physically and psychologically. This can also lead to colonization 3.0 in the Global South to build carbon capture "farms". We are already seeing the colonial genocide in the DRC for critical minerals, do we really want to put the global South more at risk with this new technology that will only spell more disaster? https://lnkd.in/eDNWAv99

🚨 Check out our new paper "Climate neutrality in European heavy-duty road transport: How to decarbonise trucks and buses in less than 30 years?", in Energy Conversion and Management. 💻 In a scenario-based analysis, we model the European energy system with a detailed energy system optimization model (DARE), and we couple it with endogenous transport demand models: a logistics optimization model for freight segments (trucks), an inter-modality model for buses and coaches and a driver behavior model to assess the impact of eco-driving practices. 💡 The key findings are: ✔ The future is electric: battery electric vehicles are the key enablers of climate neutrality, representing 60 %–89 % of trucks and 79 %–96 % of buses by 2050. ✔ Such an important electrification level corresponds to at most 320 TWh of annual power demand: only 4% of European final electricity consumption. ✔ Clean hydrogen and bio-fuels keep a small robust share in the final fuel mix of buses and trucks, notably where electrification is too difficult or costly, in the scenarios with slow uptake of batteries and electric vehicle charging networks. ✔ Fuel switch to electricity and (to some degree) hydrogen is the key enabler of decarbonization, bringing 41%–66% of fuel savings and 33%-60% of cumulative emission reductions. ✔ But, the required technology is not fully mature yet, and climate emergency calls for the accelerated deployment of quick and easy-to-deploy solutions: demand-side measures. Eco-driving, enhanced logistics and modal shift to public transportation can bring up to 50% of cumulative emission reductions. ▶ The scenario-based modelling reveals that our results are very sensitive to policy assumptions (on support mechanisms, charging network, etc.), notably those about the role of hydrogen. How can the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal ensure an efficient transition towards a sustainable and competitive European industry? The Clean Industrial Deal will be crucial for the EU to strengthen its industries and support their timely transition to climate neutrality. It must provide a detailed plan and the enabling conditions for industries to decarbonise, build their business case, unlock investment, and strengthen their competitiveness globally. Or is it just unfixable given the issue of costs, ensuring equity, and ensuring additionally and permanence?
