Seghill Landfill Education Hub inspires future leaders 🍃 We were delighted to welcome pupils from Seaton Delaval First School to the Education Hub at the SUEZ-operated Seghill restored landfill in Cramlington. The visit combined classroom learning with hands-on activities to teach children about sustainability, waste management and protecting wildlife. With two successful school visits completed and more planned for 2025, the Seghill Landfill Educational Hub is helping to inspire the next generation to care for the environment and take action to protect it. PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT: Townsville’s tuckshops to tackle climate change A new project will see Townsville schools turn #foodwaste into #soilhealth and #circulareconomy for the benefit of our waterways and Reef. The ‘Townsville’s Tuckshops Tackling Climate Change with Innovative Circular Economy’ project from Atlas Soils has received seed funding to see Townsville school students turn their tuckshop and home waste into HumiSoil® for use in sporting fields, food-growing beds, and to sell for school income while learning about sustainability, environmental science, and circular economies. The project will be delivered by teams from Atlas Soils and Three Big Rivers. 👉 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/guVzybpu “What a fantastic hands-on way for Townsville’s young people to take action for their local environment,” says our Executive Officer Kara-Mae Coulter-Atkins. “Healthier soils and carbon-friendly waste practices have flow-on benefits for our waterways and Reef. We look forward to seeing this project evolve.” The Grounds to Ground project is one of 3 successful projects to receive kickstart funding from the Townsville Community Action Plan (CAP) for Rivers & Reef. CAP projects address waterway issues of priority as identified by Townsville itself. Townsville’s CAP has been made possible by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and is co-led by the Dry Tropics Partnership for Healthy Waters and Reef Ecologic. This was a really vibrant and enjoyable event with some fabulous young people from great schools across Newcastle 😁 However, I do have some major concerns: 😩 Many of these teachers add any work for sustainability and climate to an already full timetable, they are obviously exhausted. 🤔 Several teachers were not confident on where to start when teaching about climate change because they haven't had any training themselves. 😐 Money for any enrichment activities or to cover supply to let teachers out for CPD or school visits is tight across the state system according to all teachers I spoke to. 😣 The messages they are receiving are confusing as there are many providers in this space. How do we start? 😲 Only a handful of teachers had heard about the climate and sustainability strategy or had completed their climate action plans (obvs not mandatory anyway). 😶 None had found the time to complete the DfE curriculum review, if they had heard of it at all. 😕 Even though one of the sessions was on food waste, many children piled their plates high and left food. The connections on sustainability education and education for sustainability are not happening as they need to be reinforced from early years. In summary, there is much work to be done but also a lot of fun to be had as these young people are engaged, inquisitive and enthusiastic for becoming changemakers 🙌🏽
Today Meryl was at the Newcastle City Council #NetZero Heroes event for primary schools. She hosted a workshop exploring the environmental impact of different milks. Over 100 pupils from 27 different schools used data to compare dairy and plant milks for land use, freshwater use, carbon emissions and water pollution (eutrophication) at the stand. The children had a chance to try 3 plant-based milks; the oat milk got the biggest thumbs up👍🏾 Great to see so much enthusiasm for sustainability with these amazing young people and their teachers 🙌🏾 🙌🏼 🙌🏽

TIRN is honored to partner with the Woodard & Curran Foundation on SPAWN's Lagunitas Watershed Resiliency Protection Project (LAWRP). LAWRP aims to restore watershed health and salmon habitat in the Lagunitas Creek watershed — specifically the Devil's Gulch subwatershed — to provide an ecosystem where the endangered Central California Coast (CCC) Coho salmon and other threatened salmonids can thrive. Although the CCC salmon population is persisting, 10% of the historic population puts it at near extinction and Lagunitas Creek represents the largest single run of the CCC Coho salmon. With the threat of a changing climate, there is extreme urgency to address limiting factors and restore coho habitat. LAWRP will address key limiting factors for salmonid survival in the impacted watershed by protecting critical spawning, winter and summer rearing, and out-migration smolt habitat. Success will support Coho population recovery efforts by increasing the extent and quality of in-channel and floodplain habitat. This project builds off other restoration work in the watershed to restore floodplain connection and in-stream habitat. Our goal is to provide habitat that increases overall resilience for salmonids in the entire region and with Woodard & Curran Foundation's support, we are one step closer to reaching our goal. If you would like to partner with us on this project or find more information about our restoration efforts, please visit https://lnkd.in/dK_KSk_x #thankyou #water #watershed #cohosalmon #watershed
It's with appreciation for our donors at Woodard & Curran and Woodard & Curran's matching support that we proudly announce our Board's vote and the 2024 recipient of our $100,000 #ImpactGrant...Turtle Island Restoration Network (TIRN). Thanks to the hard work of our Giving Committee and their Chair Laura Tessier for evaluating more than 40 applications, this grant will support the TIRN's Lagunitas Watershed Resiliency Project and improve critical Coho salmon spawning habitat...check out https://lnkd.in/dK_KSk_x If you aren't familiar with the work we're doing to protect our #water and #environment or our history and record of grant making, take a look at https://lnkd.in/eKFhc5cW

Interconnected Native based business plan with a non waste, interconnected kelp education and restoration approach to gather the proceeds/momentum from several products and a couple of potential Nature regeneration based new industries will provide a path for marine ecosystem survival. For nature to be able to work in conjunction with human impact instead of “farmed” in isolation, in spite of ever worsening impact.

Spreading awareness about the importance of e-waste and it’s recycling, is the need of the hour! Awareness sessions should be a part of - • Community Workshops: Host events to educate people on e-waste and its impact. • Educational Campaigns: Use social media, schools, and workplaces to spread messages. • Collaboration with Businesses: Partner with electronics manufacturers for take-back programs and eco-friendly products. • E-Waste Collection Drives: Organize recycling events to encourage participation. • Policy Advocacy: Advocate for stricter e-waste management laws and infrastructure development. Addressing e-waste is not just an environmental responsibility but also a social and economic one. Raising awareness is the first step toward creating a sustainable future.

Another win for New Freedom Borough! 🎉 The Borough has been awarded $138,000 through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Section 902 Recycling Program. These funds will support the purchase of a new chipper, a backhoe, and the creation of a publicly accessible area for recycling limb and leaf debris. 🌿♻️ This grant brings the total funding awarded to New Freedom Borough to just under $2.2 million over the past four years—a testament to the Borough's commitment to innovation and sustainability. 👏 #GrantSuccess #RecyclingInnovation #NewFreedomBorough #SustainabilityInAction
