𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🔋 In a step towards sustainable energy, a team of researchers at the University of Twente led by Dr Marco Altomare has demonstrated a new method to reduce the use of precious metals such as platinum in green hydrogen production without sacrificing performance. Their findings were recently published in Advanced Functional Materials. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁? To combat climate change and the energy crisis, we urgently need sustainable energy solutions. Green hydrogen is key, but current technology relies on expensive and scarce metals like platinum and iridium, limiting large-scale adoption. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵: Combining physical vapor deposition (PVD) and controlled solid-state dewetting methods, the researchers, in collaboration with FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and Università di Pavia, developed highly active and durable platinum electrodes. PhD researcher Shreyas Harsha says, “Our lab results indicate we can potentially reduce precious catalyst usage by about five times without compromising H2 production.” Dr Marco Altomare adds, “Our method is chemical-free, safer, scalable, and facilities at the University of Twente and MESA+ can handle large-scale catalyst coating. 💧🔬💡 Vanderbilt University researchers have developed a groundbreaking technology called #electrochemical ion pumping (EIP) that could transform water treatment and resource extraction. Published in Nature Water, this innovation overcomes limitations of conventional electrosorption by implementing a circuit-switching approach. EIP allows for continuous, unidirectional ion flow without disruptive solution switching, eliminating mixing and enhancing separation performance. The process can operate with short charging-discharge cycles, reducing unwanted side reactions and opening new possibilities for electrode design.
