The stats on mental health amongst our kids and teens are tough to hear: ❗ Suicide rates among young people aged 10-24 have jumped by 62% from 2007 to 2021. ❗ 1 in 5 children deals with a mental, emotional, or behavioural disorder. ❗ Every day, 4 teens are admitted to inpatient programs in most children’s hospitals, but the demand is far higher. The shortage of mental health providers is worrying, leaving many young people without the support they really need. 😔 But my team and I are determined to make a difference. With our fun, interactive theatre and role play, we’re empowering kids, teens and adults with the skills they need to ask for help when they need it most. With our programs, they'll gain the tools and confidence to navigate tough times. Know a school or workplace that could use our support? When it comes to seeking mental health services, black children and teens are more likely to receive it in schools than in outpatient programs. The main problem however is that schools in predominately black neighborhoods are less likely to have mental health services available in comparison to schools in predominately white neighborhoods. Here at Access Psychology Foundation, we are committed to increasing equitable access to mental health treatment and training for people of color and underserved communities. Learn more about how we are closing the gaps in access to mental health care by visiting us online at www.access-psychology.org/. #accesspsychologyfoundation #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthtreatment #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthforall

Given his background, Travis had developmental and behavioral health needs. His caregivers adored him, and it was difficult for them to recognize he needed services, such as mental health and speech therapy. Over time, Travis’s caregivers were very engaged in his speech therapy sessions, as they knew Travis was not talking as much as he should be. As Travis began saying more words, his caregivers were excited to see him making great progress. Additionally, KidSTART connected Travis with a Speech & Motion group, where he progressed even more. Meanwhile, his caregivers participated in a parent education group and learned about the services Travis needed, celebrated his successes, and learned about community resources. 💝Thanks to supporters like you, by the time he turned 3, he had graduated from mental health therapy and, group therapy, and was ready for a preschool program! He had developmentally “caught up.” Without the community’s generosity, Travis may have not received the support and services he needed. It’s easy to refer your friends, neighbors, associates, or family members considering making a move. From the Report Summary! Source: https://lnkd.in/dvpE5SdQ RECOMMENDATION 1: SUPPORT POSITIVE EXPERIENCES OF INDEPENDENCE, EXPLORATION, AND LEARNING ⛺ Educators can provide opportunities for youth to take initiative in their learning, make their own decisions, and engage in age-appropriate exploration. ⛺ Educators can help their students successfully collaborate with and learn from peers. ⛺ Teachers can help address inequities in opportunities for students to practice independence and exploration during early adolescence. RECOMMENDATION 2: IMPLEMENT STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT HEALTHY REGULATION OF EMOTION AND BEHAVIOR 🤗 Teachers can help early adolescents recognize and manage their emotions and behaviors in healthy ways as a part of daily classroom activities. 🤗 Classroom-based mindfulness interventions implemented using research-based methods can be an equitable and effective strategy to help students regulate their emotions and behavior. 🤗 Teachers can take advantage of existing resources to help students learn to successfully regulate their emotions and behavior. RECOMMENDATION 3: ENCOURAGE YOUTH TO BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS 🤲 Teachers should be intentional in building strong relationships with their students. 🤲 Teachers should help students develop social skills and build strong peer relationships. 🤲 By helping students form strong relationships at school, teachers can contribute to a more positive school environment overall. RECOMMENDATION 4: IMPLEMENT PRACTICES THAT SUPPORT HEALTHY SLEEP HABITS 🛌 Teachers, students, and parents should be given more information about young people’s need for sleep during early adolescence. 🛌 Educators should take a supportive approach when students are tired or sleeping in class and avoid punitive consequences. 🛌 With appropriate support, teachers can implement classroom-based monitoring of students’ sleep health.
Early adolescence—roughly ages 10 to 13—is a unique time in development where young people experience rapid social, cognitive, and emotional changes. These changes shape young adolescents in both positive and negative ways and offer opportunities to support youth and promote positive mental health. Middle-school educators can be a crucial first line in promoting each young person’s well-being. In the new brief, the National Scientific Council on #Adolescence (NSCA) provides research-based recommendations for educators to promote positive #mentalhealth in their classrooms. Today is #YouthMentalHealthDay. Children’s mental health challenges are on the rise and schools are under pressure to deliver bigger and better outcomes. Research shows that children from low socio-economic backgrounds are three more likely to experience a mental health problem and, since 2017, mental health disorders in children aged 6-16 years have risen from 1 in 9 (11.6%) to 1 in 6 (17.4%). At Chapter One, our vision is of a world where all children have the literacy skills needed to thrive. We believe strongly that learning to read is not just about succeeding in school, it’s about succeeding in life and children who read are more likely to be happier, healthier, and experience better mental wellbeing and self-esteem. Thank you to all of our corporate partners, volunteers, schools and funders who help us to transform children’s futures. 📚 #ChapterOne #itallstartswithliteracy #employeewellbeing #socialvalue #socialimpact #socialmobility #literacy #corporatepartnerships #corporatevolunteering #mentalhealth

Autistic adults are nine times more likely to die from suicide. Autistic children are twenty times more likely to self-harm. This World Suicide Prevention Day, it is vital that we recognise the additional barriers that autistic people experience when accessing mental health supports, and the devastating impact this can have. Autism NI continues to lobby for mental health professionals across Northern Ireland to be trained in autism, and offer tailored support strategies that work for autistic people. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #WSPD2024 #AutisticMindsMatter
