#Procurement #SupplyChain #CIPS Every profession, including procurement and supply chain, stands on a set of standards. For instance, a doctor or an engineer can provide basic advice within their field because they have been trained in these fundamentals. Only later does specialisation come, such as studying dermatology or power transmission. A profession like Procurement and Supply Chain Management is different, though, because there isn’t a universally recognised set of fundamentals. Universities and certification bodies don’t typically define a set of fundamental theories that these professionals should know. This is where CIPS - The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply comes in ! In 2018, we developed our own set of global standards for procurement and supply chain professionals, which sets out what excellence should look like in practice, at all levels, in all sectors, anywhere in the world. These standards are organised into four themes and eleven pillars (another post on that another time !) so when someone earns a qualification through CIPS, it certifies that they have expertise in these pillars. We ensure the standards stay relevant as the field evolves by updating the standards every two years with the help of professionals from around the world. For example, in the last revision, we added sustainability and EDI because of their growing importance in the field. Until now, the world has not really accepted that you can also have a qualified procurement and supply chain professional. The only common qualified professions have been doctors, engineers, lawyers… But the profession is starting to be recognised among them now ! So when I am asked, “What is the value of a CIPS qualification?” I answer with an analogy: 👉 Attaining a driver’s license is one thing, but the real skill lies in being able to navigate a car under any conditions, on any road, and in any environment. When someone is CIPS qualified, it signifies to others that they have attained confidence, competencies and credibility in the field of procurement and supply chain management. They have earned the license to practice, and they have transformed from a professional to a practitioner. They can transfer their knowledge into action, apply their learnings in real-world scenarios, and adhere to global standards in their practice. If you want to excel in your career and have other benefits like the sense of belongingness (and pride) that comes with being a member of our CIPS Community, then a CIPS qualification could be for you !
