🌍 #FIDIfocus: With 'reuse' as a central tenet of the circular economy, several movers have embarked on ambitious projects for reusing boxes and other cardboard packaging. FIDI Focus Editor Dominic Weaver speaks to some of the industry frontrunners about the challenges and solutions of these initiatives. Recovery and recycling products typically take more resources and energy than reuse, and can create pollution and waste in the process. Our LessW8 films solve this problem by drastically reducing the amount of film needed per pallet 📦. Depending on the load, our films can cut usage by 𝟯𝟬-𝟲𝟱%. This means that for every 100 grams of film we eliminate, we’re reducing 500 grams of CO2 from the total emissions. For example, cutting 200 grams of film removes a full kilogram of CO2 🌿. Over thousands of shipments, the reduction in your carbon footprint is enormous 🌍. What’s more, our Lessw8 films are 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 ♻️, making them not only effective in reducing CO2 but also contributing to a circular economy. However, cutting film usage usually raises concerns about load stability. This is where Lessw8 truly shines ✨. In 2024, reducing environmental impact became one of our top priorities. To turn this vision into reality, we created a Sustainability team with seven colleagues. This team is dedicated to identifying opportunities, implementing changes, and inspiring our entire company to contribute to a greener future. We are proud to share some of the steps taken so far: ➡️ Reducing Styrofoam usage. We’ve cut down our reliance on Styrofoam shipping boxes by 80%. ➡️Minimizing paper waste. ➡️Recycling gloves. Through the Kimberly-Clark Professional RightCycle program, we aim to recycle 90% of our lab gloves. ➡️Encouraging sustainable travel. For travel within Europe, we prioritize trains and electric vehicles whenever possible. ➡️Recycling Nanopore flow cells. Around 80% of the flow cells we purchase are returned to Oxford Nanopore for recycling. ➡️Repurposing materials. Shipping boxes are made available for employees to reuse, such as for moving. ➡️Energy efficiency. We’ve installed LED lighting, reducing our energy consumption by 50%. 🔗 Interested in learning more?
