🌊 THE CALM BEFORE THE NEXT WAVE... 💭 These past months have been a rollercoaster of milestones and quiet, unseen work. From launching MiMIAT Health here in Spain, expanding to Kenya - our first step into Africa - and presenting in front of the Bavarian Ministry of Health, each moment has felt like a wave pushing us further. Yet, behind all of this, there’s an "ocean" of effort, resilience, and teamwork that often goes unnoticed. ❤️ A huge, huge thanks to the incredible team behind MiMIAT: Eleni, Sofia Vigna, Florencia Luz Duarte, Aleksandra Dziadus, Paula, Carlota Aparicio Vazquez and now Larissa Milani! Each one of them brings their unique skills, dedication, and passion to the table, making this journey possible. Without them, MiMIAT wouldn’t be where it is today, and without them, this mission simply wouldn’t make sense. ✨ Sitting here at Norrsken Barcelona, a place that feels like home, it’s moments like this that allow me to pause and breathe. The amazing view may be calming, but it’s the incredible staff and fellow colleagues who make this space one of reconnection and inspiration. These pauses remind me why we keep going and what lies ahead: the next wave of work, challenges, and mainly... social impact. 🍀 The journey continues, and the next wave is already forming. What’s been your “calm before the wave”? How do you find moments to reflect before diving into what’s next? #founderjourney #mimiat #mimiathealth #healthtech #gratitude #socialimpact #NorrskenBarcelona

🚶 How does mobility and its various dimensions facilitate healthy aging in terms of physical health, subjective well-being, social participation, and cognition? How does the environmental context shape actual mobility and mobility potential? 🔎 Exploring these relationships in two comparable yet different contexts is the central goal of the MAMBHA study (“Mapping real-life mobility and healthy aging”) with Project Leaders Christina Röcke (HLC Co-Director) and Philippe Gerber (Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research). Funded by the Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF and the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), MAMBHA integrates existing data of two studies from Switzerland and Luxembourg, MOASIS (🔗 https://lnkd.in/d24Mth5a) and CURHA (🔗 https://lnkd.in/dSDZwW7j) and their longitudinal extensions to examine long-term trajectories in concert with short-term mobility-health patterns. 🎉 The MAMBHA study just celebrated its kick-off meeting in Zurich - including an after-work Christmas sweater interlude… 👉 Learn more about the project here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dZSNjpeE #healthyaging #mobility #research Harald Gall, Birgit Kleim, Christina Röcke, Susan Mérillat, Marc Grosjean, Edouard Battegay, Burcu Demiray, Marcus Grüschow, Marta Marciniak, Stephanie Homan, PhD, Sandra Oppikofer, Dr. phil. It was weird in a good way to bare my soul to Zat Astha who is dogged in getting to the 'Why' or one's 'True North'. In this interview published in The Peak Singapore, I shared the 'Why' behind AMILI and what continues to drive myself and my passionate colleagues. I had enjoyed a good run in strategy consulting with Oliver Wyman and before that in healthcare services with SingHealth and Fortis Healthcare which is now part of IHH Healthcare and was actually intending to slow down, but it was not to be! The 'quiet life' of a part-time academic role in National University of Singapore, sitting on some boards and some advisory was disrupted by our decision to set AMILI up. As I joked with a class in Singapore Management University earlier today, a mix of mid-life crisis and middle-aged hubris led to AMILI ("How hard can it be?"). No regrets. I am much more convinced today than 5 years ago when we started that unlocking the secrets of the #microbiome will transform health and healthcare and equally convicted that we in #asia need to find our own way. 🤔 🤔 “At the end of 2018, I’d actually decided to retire,” Lim confesses, his voice hinting at a kind of wistful relief. He had spent years building a flourishing healthcare consulting practice. It was thriving, he was thriving, but he knew consulting was “a young person’s game.” After decades of late nights and frequent travel, Lim wondered, “Do I really want to keep doing this for the rest of my life?” The answer, ultimately, was no. After initially considering retirement or a quiet academic position at NUS, Lim’s conversation with his future co-founders led him to a new calling. Their message resonated: ‘If we don’t do this, no one else will.’ Today, Lim and his team at AMILI maintain Asia’s largest multi-ethnic microbiome database, aimed at understanding the unique needs of Southeast Asia’s diverse populations. Unlike many health technologies imported from the West, AMILI’s research focuses on people living in Southeast Asia — multi-ethnic populations whose microbiomes differ vastly from those in the West. As Lim points out, “Across regions, microbiomes differ significantly, which makes sense — people in tropical, rice-eating areas have different microbes compared to those in temperate, wheat-eating regions. Microbes evolve and adapt to the environment they’re in.” The uniqueness of our microbiomes is shaped by our diet, climate, and lifestyle, meaning that findings from Europe or America don’t necessarily apply here. Instead of asking, “Does Bulgarian yoghurt work for us?” Lim and his team focus on finding, “What is the equivalent of Bulgarian yoghurt for multi-ethnic Asia?” This kind of specificity — this precision — is what AMILI aims to offer. Meet our expansive team from #Spain, #Italy and the #UK, united for our annual #LuraDay for 2024 - without this team of people, Lura Care would not achieve such a phenomenal outcome to helping people improve their quality of life. ..."we are #exponentially increasing our social impact: last year we managed to assist more than 20,000 #dependent people or people with #mobility problems through our #adapted home services. And with this we have improved the #quality of life of more than 6,000 people, helping them to #eat again without difficulties, to #socialise normally within their environment, and to #smile again without feeling self-conscious." https://lnkd.in/e8ihuDhB

🌟 Why Southern Europeans Will Soon Be the Longest-Lived People in the World! 🌍🍇 Interesting article by The Economist Did you know that Southern Europe is set to have the longest-lived people by 2050? 🌞✨ Key drivers are 1️⃣ Diet & Tradition: While the Mediterranean diet is famous (I love it!), the secret lies in the traditional "peasant foods" 🥖🍠🍇. These habits, combined with modern adaptations, keep them healthy despite enjoying treats like fried fish and salted ham! 2️⃣ Movement - city centres help: Spaniards lead Western Europe in daily steps 🚶♂️🚶♀️ with an average of 5,936 steps per day! This is of course good against obesity-related diseases and boost longevity overall. 3️⃣ Urban Design: Spanish cities are models of walkability. Other cities aiming for the "15-minute city" concept can learn a lot from Spain! 4️⃣ Social Life: Strong social ties and community support play a crucial role. 👫👭 With 76% of Spaniards feeling socially supported, their physical and psychological well-being gets a good boost - Quality time with friends and family helps quality of life and health. 5️⃣ Cultural Heritage: Balancing European wealth and healthcare with a vibrant, Latin-inspired social culture, Spaniards live in the moment and treasure their relationships. This blend is key to their longevity. 🌸🌟 Southern Europeans might not top happiness charts, but their emphasis on family, friendships, and active living sets them on a path to long, fulfilling lives. 🏅💖 Happy to live in #Madrid myself and know Universal Diagnostics S.A. is from here. #Longevity #HealthyLiving #MediterraneanLife #UrbanDesign #SocialWellBeing #LinkedInInsights https://lnkd.in/d-AGAYJQ

Estonia may be small, but its #healthtech landscape is unique. Located in the heart of the #Nordics and the heart of the #EU, it offers a great geographical and geopolitical position. Estonia's health tech ecosystem is built on a fully digital infrastructure, making it stand out globally🌎. It’s nurtured by an entirely digital nation and that’s what makes it unique. As a digital nation, Estonia is seamlessly connected to the rest of the world. Before attending Estonian Health Tech Week 2023, I wasn't aware of Estonia's world-class gene bank. It’s something we learned more about during the program and is truly remarkable. 💡 The networking opportunities were diverse, connecting me with professionals from across Europe and beyond. The event facilitated interactions in various settings—conference rooms, buses, boats, restaurants, and the gene bank—which helped solidify these connections. The contacts were solid, and we built relationships that are carrying on a year later. It was the diversity - government, academia, and the private sector all of them covered perfectly. 🤝 I've been in touch with several companies I met during Health Tech Week. I’ve built connections between Tallinn and Tartu, and the random networking has led to commercial opportunities for my company. I’ve also connected with companies surrounding the ecosystem. I’ve been able to speak to them because I understood more about the cluster. This event significantly expanded my network in the Nordics and beyond, connecting me with people interested in the UK market. So, we’re giving and taking and helping each other. 🙌 #Networking #Innovation #HealthTech #Biotech #AI #Nordics #Europe #EstonianHealthTechWeek #GlobalConnections

August 07, 2024 | Read Online African healthcare needs a lifeline 🩺 And startups have been stepping up fb fb fb fb Welcome to Tech Safari! Your tour guide on African Tech 🧭 Hello to the new folks who have joined the Safari since the last edition. If you haven't subscribed, join thousands of smart folks curious about tech in Africa. Sign Me Up 🌍 Hey 👋🏽 Caleb and Sheriff here. Today we’re talking about health tech. There’s a wide gap in access to healthcare in Africa. While the rest of the world is moving on, Africa seems to be falling behind. Some health tech startups are trying to solve the problem. But is it enough? Let’s get into it! 20 years ago, 15-year-old Adebayo Alonge had a near-death experience. He had an asthma attack and needed a drug to calm his lungs. Adebayo Alonge, founder of RxAll. Source: Harvard Kennedy School His dad rushed to the local pharmacy to get the pills. But instead, he was sold a fake drug that put Adebayo in a coma for three weeks. Thankfully, he survived but the experience changed his life. Adebayo went on to study pharmacy in college and invented a machine that detects fake drugs using light. Then he started RxAll, a company fighting fake medicines using tech. But this story is not just about Adebayo. It’s about the system that nearly cost him his life. A sick system treating sick people Africa has over 1.4 billion people and nearly half can’t access quality healthcare. It’s either too expensive, far away, or doesn’t exist. For these people, healthcare looks very different. It’s a small clinic with overworked nurses, a local pharmacy, or a traditional healer. And this has created a host of problems: Africa carries 23% of the world’s disease burden Around 42% of drugs sold in Africa are fake - killing 50,000 people every year And there are only two doctors for every 10,000 people. And if you think things are bad now - it’s set to get twice as bad as Africa’s population doubles over the next 25 years. While countries like the US are beating diseases and focusing on longevity, African lives will stay short. That’s why African healthcare needs a lifeline … Because these problems run deep The US will spend 19% of its budget ($1.14 trillion) on healthcare this year. In Africa, the best figure you’ll find is 9% from South Africa. And when health systems get little funding, the cracks show. In late 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic infected four million people in South Africa. Hospitals got overwhelmed and the health system couldn’t keep up. In the end, over 100,000 people died - including more than 1,300 health workers. During the pandemic, South Africa was one of the worst-hit countries in the world. Source: NY Times But here’s the thing → South Africa has some of the best healthc

let me just highlight 1 out of the 6 characteristics of a reputable longevity clinic that actually means business, according to Petr Sramek: "The clinic should actively participate in longevity clinical studies." I recommend to read the other 5 in the post below
