Last month, Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) released the 3rd edition of the Aquaculture Certification Schemes Benchmark report, assessing current #animalwelfare requirements across eight global seafood certification schemes and one international ratings agency. Through ALI's Certifier Campaign, we’re driving accountability within #seafood certification to ensure that products labeled as “sustainable” or “high welfare” adhere to rigorous aquatic animal welfare standards. Over the past few weeks, we've explored the different areas of FAO's new Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA). In our final post, we highlight biosecurity and animal welfare recommendations. The guidelines emphasize: - Adoption of international, national, and regional standards on the health of aquatic organisms - Reduction in antimicrobial use - Training producers in disease prevention, early detection, and control Ensuring the highest welfare standards for our fish is a priority for GSI members, which is why we have a dedicated Task Force committed to driving improvements in the industry. Join the movement to protect aquatic animals 🐟 Addressing aquatic #animalwelfare in the #seafood industry requires a multi-faceted approach. It’s crucial to tackle the issues of aquatic animal suffering from various angles—there's no one-size-fits-all solution. We must engage in targeted actions to create effective change and lasting impact. Aquatic Life Institute is addressing these issues through the following programs: ✅ Certifier Campaign: Partnering with seafood certifiers to ensure high welfare standards for aquatic animals, focusing on the 5 pillars of welfare in aquaculture and the 5 stages of suffering in capture fisheries, with attention to species-specific requirements. 🔗 Supply Chain: Collaborating with industry leaders to promote humane practices throughout the entire seafood supply chain. 🌐 Policy Initiatives: Shaping global policies with the EU and FAO to recognize and protect aquatic animals while considering their unique species-specific requirements and vulnerabilities. 🤝 Coalition Building: Uniting nonprofits, academics, industry leaders, and the public to advocate for aquatic animal welfare. 🔍 Research: Conducting research to drive industry and legislative change by defining high welfare standards and targeted improvement strategies that are tailored to the unique needs of different species. The Carefish/catch project aims to assess animal welfare impacts in fisheries, identifying potential ways to reduce suffering during the catching process. As part of this initiative, the catch branch of the fair-fish database expands its scope from aquaculture to include fisheries. 💡Each profile in this branch assesses the welfare risks linked to every step of the catching process. Among these risks is mortality itself. We are currently running the largest research trial ever conducted in Singapore on saline tilapia, also known as Mozambique tilapia or Straits Fish or O. mossambicus 🐟. Our team at Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory started by individually measuring half a ton of fish and is now working to pinpoint the "sweet spots" where seawater farm productivity can be enhanced without compromising animal welfare.
