Today is the final day of this year’s #NetZeroWeek, but it is certainly not the end of the journey.     The residential retrofit decarbonisation sector is growing bigger and stronger, continuing to make a noticeable difference to lives across the UK every day. 🏠    During what has been a week of change following a new government gaining power, Net Zero Week has acted as a timely reminder that we must regularly take stock and identify the factors for success.     Before the next Net Zero Week, three of the key things we would like to see within our sector to support the journey include:     - Increased policy and funding momentum 📈  - More strategic partnerships to increase the scale and pace of delivery 🤝  - Sector-wide adoption of a place-based approach and better options for private homeowners to enhance entire communities 🏘️    For more information on our approach to retrofit decarbonisation and our contribution to the net zero journey, visit https://lnkd.in/epd52TXv   #RetrofitDecarbonisation #Housing #Sustainability #NetZero 

Let's have a session recap from #Housing2024 last week In a lively and insightful session titled "Hot Property: Valuing Zero Bill Homes," experts from Octopus Energy and Platform Housing Group came together to discuss the transformative potential of zero bill homes. Emma Fletcher MRICS, Michael Cottrell, and Katie Gilmartin shared their experiences and visions for a sustainable, financially resilient future. Michael Cottrell kicked off the session by introducing the innovative concept of zero bill homes—properties equipped with (around 18-24) solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps to eliminate energy bills for up to ten years. Emma Fletcher MRICS highlighted the emerging evidence supporting the benefits of zero bill homes. Over a year of data now demonstrates that these homes not only reduce carbon footprints but also increase property values by 7-8%, as noted by CBRE. Katie Gilmartin from Platform Housing Group shared the social housing landlord perspective on the business case for zero bill homes. While acknowledging the challenges, she stressed the broader value these homes offer. In conclusion, the session underscored the exciting potential of zero bill homes to transform housing by eliminating energy bills, enhancing tenant well-being, and contributing to environmental sustainability. Kingston’s Efficient Homes Show returns! Working with communities towards a greener future that protects and enhances the environment is a key priority for us, and we know that helping people to reduce emissions generated at home plays a huge role in tackling climate change. London has some of Europe’s oldest housing, with 80% of all homes expected to exist in 2050 having already been built. While much of it was built to stand the test of time, it wasn’t built with a changing climate or modern energy efficiency standards in mind. This is why, in 2023, we decided to take a holistic approach - gathering residents, businesses, contractors and educators together at the borough’s first ever Efficient Homes Show. Around 400 people attended to get advice about reducing their energy bills, find out about renewable technology, generate business leads and protect the planet. Sustainability news 🧡 Wolverhampton has been selected as one of seven places to lead the charge as a net-zero neighbourhood, with the government investing £6.2 million to support the region's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2041. Led by the West Midlands Combined Authority, early-stage planning will commence in Wolverhampton, alongside Birmingham, Coventry, Sandwell, Solihull, and Walsall. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the region's commitment to decarbonising homes and businesses, with innovative measures underway to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable living. Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho recently visited Dudley, where an estate is poised to become one of the UK's pioneering carbon offsetting areas through retrofitting. With cutting-edge insulation, solar panels, and low carbon heating systems, these homes represent a glimpse into the future of sustainable living. Can setting a price for the carbon a company releases, help cut down real estate emissions? Carbon Pricing isn't a totally new idea; other industries view it as a pivotal strategy in their journey towards decarbonization. But for real estate? It's pretty much uncharted territory. Only 6% of real estate companies use it or plan to do so in the next 2 years.
