How Outbound Made Me a Better Marketer: (And changed my approach to marketing) As a content marketer who pivoted to demand generation Inbound was my world for the longest time My first outbound campaign changed it all up for me. Here are 4 lessons I learned: 1. Deeply Understanding the Market and Customers ↳ Outbound requires knowing your target market inside out. You go deep into a country/region and realise marketing works differently there. ↳ Talking to customers uncovers a lot more than assumptions based off of persona slides 2. Collaborating with Sales for Real-World Insights ↳ Simply put, outbound and B2B marketing simply doesn't work without marketing-sales cohesion. ↳ Helped in creating better content for sales 3. Mastering Different Communication Formats ↳ Yes, copywriting for ads is great. But, nothing gets the creative juices flowing than crafting a creative introduction to get people to respond ↳ Look at email sequences as a way to tell a story 4. Embracing Failure and Iteration ↳ No outbound effort has guaranteed success. Draw a hypothesis, execute, evaluate and repeat. ↳ I learned a lot more about my audience from campaigns that didn't 'convert' than from ones that did. -- How has outbound transformed your journey as a marketer? "Marketing isn’t WORKING!!!" If you’re an accounting, CFO, or tax advisory firm, chances are you’ve felt this frustration. If your marketing efforts aren’t delivering results, it’s because marketing has changed. Audience is making decisions differently, consuming content differently, and responding differently. Let’s break it down: 1. WHAT has changed Ads used to generate quality leads faster, but now? You need more effort for less ROI. Organic content used to gain traction quicker; now it takes longer and requires consistency. You could skip personal branding or podcasts before—not anymore. DMs and outreach once had higher response rates, but conversion cycles are getting longer. 2. WHY it’s changed Oversaturation: People are overwhelmed with content, ads, and outreach. Attention spans are shrinking. Buyers are confused by too many options, frustrated by constant noise. 3. WHAT works now Communities: Buyers trust peers more than ads. Communities are influencing decisions. Consistency: Smaller attention spans mean consistent content keeps you visible. Content Mix: Focus on middle- and bottom-of-the-funnel content—think video case studies, "How I did X" posts, and process breakdowns via Loom. How to Adapt? → Research your audience deeply. What do they care about? What keeps them up at night? → Find your niche. The narrower, the better. → Post consistently. Build trust by showing up. → Leverage niche platforms. Be a guest on relevant podcasts and speak at niche events. → Create your own community. Engage with your audience on a deeper level. → Revamp your content strategy. Ensure you have a balanced mix of thought leadership, case studies, and actionable advice. Marketing is evolving—and winning requires strategy, execution, and time. Not sure where to start? I've been leveraging content marketing to help companies deliver business results for the past 14 years ➡ I've helped a B2B tech close a multi-million dollar deal in 30 days they were trying to close for 12 months with no progress ➡ I've helped deliver a 75% conversion rate and 292% return on ad spend for a DTC brand ➡ I've helped increase lead-to-customer conversion rate from 12.6% to 25.4% for a B2C brand And many other examples I don't want to bore you with Here's what I've realized in Every. Single. Case. 100% of the time There was one main factor that drove all these results, and that factor was their brand authority We positioned their brand as the go-to expert to their target audience for what they offer through content I didn't realize it back then, but I do now It's being able to understand their business, to do the research, to uncover that one area of genius that differentiates their brand Then double down on that one thing through our content, copy, ads and overall messaging This is what has led to these results, and it's where our area of genius lies If you want to increase the effectiveness of your marketing and sales First start with helping your target audience see you as the obvious choice to help them: 1️⃣ Solve a problem 2️⃣ Deliver an outcome And the best way to do that - in my humble opinion - is through content As always... Everyone thinks they know marketing because it is one of those fields that seems accessible. It is also a fact that, as humans, we are constantly creating a personal brand & marketing ourselves, inturn, making it an intuitive skill. But professionally, it is an entirely new ballgame, and not everyone can play it well. I've listed below, some of the reasons why I think that, everyone has an opinion on how to do a marketer’s job: 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: Marketing is everywhere - from billboards to social media. Because people are constantly exposed to marketing messages, they feel they understand what works and what doesn’t. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Everyone has preferences and opinions about ads, brands, and promotions. Personal experiences with products and services lead people to believe they understand broader marketing principles. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝘀: Basic marketing concepts like "know your audience" or "create engaging content" seem straightforward and easy to grasp, leading people to underestimate the complexity behind them. 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: High-profile success stories often simplify the process of marketing into a few key steps, ignoring the strategy & execution involved. This creates a perception that it is simple & easy. 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: With the rise of social media, many people have become digital creators in their own right, gaining followers and monetizing their content. In turn, giving the impression that anyone with followers (or bots) is a good marketer. 𝗗𝗜𝗬 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀: Platforms like Chat-Gpt, AI-Tools, Facebook, Google Ads, and Canva have democratized marketing, providing easy-to-use tools that make basic marketing tasks accessible to everyone. This ease of use can give a false sense of mastery. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: People understand marketing from a consumer perspective. They see what appeals to them and assume those insights apply universally, not realizing the nuances and variations needed for different audiences and contexts. 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀: Marketing efforts have visible outcomes, such as viral campaigns, which people see and think they understand. They don't see the behind-the-scenes planning and iterations involved. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗼𝗽 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Movies, TV shows, and books often portray marketing as glamorous and straightforward, emphasizing creativity over the complex analytical work that goes into successful campaigns. While these factors contribute to the perception that marketing is easy, the reality is that effective marketing requires a 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀. #MentalMorsels #Marketing
