Rooting for underestimated entrepreneurs on the 0 to $1M journey | Get your first 100 Happy Paying Customers with go-to-market (GTM) micro-tests | 2x first GTM hire | 5 GTM mistakes to avoid (free video) featured below

Niching down is terrifying. I know this first-hand. I started off as a "marketing consultant for early-stage tech startups". What's wrong with that? 👇 When I went to market with this, I got questions like: * does early-stage mean Series A startups? * do you work with bootstrapped ones? * what type of marketing do you do? * do you do strategy or execution? * can you set up our emails? * can you write blogs? So, what happened? After several projects that didn't feel right. And, referrals that were not a good fit for me... I had a realization: I had fallen into the classic startup trap. I was too afraid to niche down so my messaging lacked clarity. How do I know? Most common reaction was: "Oh that's interesting" or "That's great". These translate to "???" <-- the worst reaction ever. Hate is better than confused because they GET your: + Customers: who, outcome, status quo + Positioning: what, why us And, they just disagree / dislike it 🤷♀️ I got to work running GTM micro-tests on my business. I've gotten specific about my customer segment. I completely revamped my product (i.e. offer). I ran very drastic experiments. And 2 years in, here's my latest positioning: I help... + underestimated pre-PMF tech startup founders (who) + solve the *business*-market-fit puzzle (outcome) + with my done-with-you GTM program (what) + We run go-to-market micro-tests (why us) + without burning cash & time (status quo) Is there room for improvement? ALWAYS. But, is it more specific and clear? You tell me in comments👇 (p.s. you can be brutally honest. It helps me get better) Positioning template: I help {who} to {outcome} with {what}. We {why us} unlike {status quo}. You can mix-up the order and framing but these 5 components are critical. 👉 What's your latest positioning? p.s. why is applying your own method to your business so difficult?! Anyone else feel this?

It is super hard to get positioning right. It is arguably the hardest part of GTM because you just have to test it know if it works. Feedback is gold. Let me know what you think about mine, and share yours in a new comment for feedback. Let's go!

Used to be a T-Shape marketer. Niched down to a Mail-order / eCom expert. Niched down to Funnel Builder. (For anybody.) Niched down to Growth Marketer. Niched down to The Virality Guy. Will probably niche down even further, either SaaS only, or eCom only. Never felt better, life's never been easier.

I'm not sharing mine because I still don't have a niche! I imagine several others who have read this post are in the same boat... ⛵ The concept of serving a specific niche makes 100% sense. It makes it clear exactly who your audience is. It helps you to find the people who are looking for exactly what you have to offer. It allows you to serve your audience better because you get reps in the exact business problems they're trying to solve. Conceptually I understand the benefits of niching, but have been having a hard time putting it into practice. 🤔

Oh I've been there... it's funny that even when you *know* the importance of carefully selecting a specific target niche and messaging directly to them, it's STILL hard to do it.

The visual 🤣 LOVE IT. I have been going through the process too over the my first 8 months of fractional work. It's really challenging, but I like your positioning template a lot. Definitely going to try that out!

so many great insights here! always such a struggle between being specific and intentional and not wanting to turn potential clients away. this feels like a great way to think about things!
