It was insightful and inspiring to connect with fellow Aussies to discuss infrastructure, technology, economic security, and geopolitics. Australia's geographic location in the world, which was once (unfairly) described as 'tyranny of distance', has become one of its greatest strengths, located in the beating heart of the dynamic Indo-Pacific region. Australia's insights and analysis of the region are highly prized here in DC and it was a nice refresher to hear them after 10 years living in the U.S.! We discussed Chell Lyons and Roland Rajah's work to increase economic security in an age of instability by creating a new MDB. We explored Alexandre Dayant's industry-leading research on development assistance across SE-Asia and the Pacific. We shared how The Wilson Center is leading thought leadership on international infrastructure development, discussing challenges such as private capital mobilization for infrastructure and the upcoming re-authorization of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. What's clear is that the same thinking that got us into the age of crisis cannot get us out of it. We need visionary ideas that are genuinely inclusive, sustainable, and resilient, coupled with bold action. Today's discussion proved that we aren't short of visionary ideas. Thanks to Mark Kennedy for organizing and hosting.
Great discussion with between The Wilson Center's Wahba Institute and Australia's Lowy Institute - Rory Linehan, Sam Barr, Roland Rajah, Alexandre Dayant, Dr. Prashanth Parameswaran, Chell Lyons, Jeff Kucik.

"What do you actually work on?" is a question you regularly get as an academic, researcher, or expert. In fact, explaining your area of expertise and research interests in a short and easily understandable phrase is at least as important as (and sometimes even more challenging than) entering into the details of your work. My answer in a nutshell is usually: I work on the links between global events and power shifts and European security and defence, and what that means for Europe as a global actor. As part of my non-resident fellowship programme with Notre Dame International Security Center, I am sharing more insights into my research in this video. https://lnkd.in/ewuzcC_E During the fellowship time, and building on my research time at Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies earlier this year, I plan to work more on Europeans in alliances, and especially the tensions between a fear of abandonment and entrapment in the context of US-China competition. Stay tuned! PS: Never did any kind of video recording with so much jetlag, even the morning run following a 22h travel didn't help get rid of the panda eyes. 🐼

Great learning more about international port cities.
AIVP was in 📍 Boston (USA) from 🗓 28 to 31 October, where our organisation’s Head of International Development Anas Laani met with various stakeholders from US port cities. Anas Laani held talks with Jeanne Dasaro, Business Strategy Manager for the City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Economic Opportunity & Inclusion, to present AIVP’s work and discuss the situation at the port city of Boston. He also attended the AAPA Annual Convention & Exposition, held by the American Association of Port Authorities, one of AIVP’s partner organisations, since 2006. 👉 Read more: https://swll.to/MnEk7

🌍 Happy Europe Day, or should I say Saint Schuman ?! 🇪🇺 Coincidence? Hear the message from the Universe today: We have stumbled upon a delightful cosmic event—Europe Day is also Ascension Day! It's like the Universe is giving us a gentle nudge to rise and soar together. ☀️ As we honor the vision of Robert Schuman and the founding Apostles of the European Union, here comes the idea of Ascension. Beyond the physical ascent, Ascension Day invites us to elevate our perspectives and aspirations. It is a reminder to reach higher, both individually and collectively. On this special day, we can reinforce the concept of self-awareness. Understanding ourselves better enables us to empathize with others, bridge differences, and build stronger bonds. It is an invitation to take responsibility - rather than looking for the - usual - scapegoat… Whether you are a believer in the Holy European Spirit and its trinity of Institutions, or a skeptic, or you are waiting to be saved - or even an agnostic this day can embody the concept of unity and diversity, reminding us that our strengths lie in coming together, united in our differences. So, here's to reaching new heights of self-awareness, compassion, and unity. May we ascend not just in name, but in spirit—lifting ourselves and each other towards a brighter future, guided by the values of peace, solidarity, and understanding. 🌟🇪🇺 Cheers to the stars aligning for Europe and beyond! 🌠 #EuropeDay #AscensionDay #SaintSchuman

I tend to disagree with the way it's put on the first page of the document from hashtag #europeanspaceforum, as it can be read as "Europe's freedom of action and autonomous decision-making are at risk because the providers of the data are private industrial companies". And I really hope that this is not exactly what ASD-Eurospace wanted to say. Because I think the problem is not that the government depends on private providers of solutions, nor in the "private" character of industry per se, but rather that the existing support measures for private companies in Europe are insufficient to ensure EU freedom and autonomy in space. This is why a consistent industrial policy is so important and indispensable for the EU space sector in a first place! Olivier Lemaitre Charles Galland
🗣️ On Monday and Tuesday, ASD-Eurospace Secretary General Olivier Lemaitre & Policy Manager Charles Galland attended the Forum Europe's European Space Forum 2024 in Brussels. Please find below the key takeaways from their interventions 👇 Many thanks to Forum Europe (Dan Craft, Karolina Stankiewicz, Tom Chinnock) for the opportunity to speak and the great organisation 👏

What does knowledge mean in the 21st century? The first day of our Festival is dedicated precisely to this question. Katarzyna Drożdżal, the Head of the Program Board of WUD Silesia, in her latest article on our blog, brings up this question, outlining a fascinating picture of ourselves - a "society immersed in information" that may have permanently abandoned aspirations to become a "knowledge society". We invite you to read it! Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/duVUgXDz And what does knowledge mean to you? 🤔

May 21st, 2002 In response to the unilateral standardization of culture and commercialization by large capital cultures facing humanity worldwide. It is an international anniversary established by the United Nations to ease conflicts and confrontations between peoples and capital on the premise of mutual respect through dialogue and compromise. In May, to mark World Day for Cultural Diversity Dialogue and Development, why don't we learn about 'The gaze of the Other : Documentary heritage of the Salesian apostolic Vicariate in the Ecuadorian Amazon, 1890-1930 ' and discuss the meaning of this Memory of the World.
