PhotonHub Europe is a one-stop-shop for SMEs in Europe aiming at spreading photonic technologies in next-generation products. This EU project thus aims at reaching out to many ''non-photonic'' companies and contributes to the #integration of #photonic #solutions in more and more products. Join us for next week's Swissphotonics lunch chat by Pierre-Yves Fonjallaz from EPFL/Swissphotonics and Andreas Voelker from CSEM who describe the #opportunities offered by PhotonHub Europe and how this #operates #in #practice. Furthermore, they will explain the special opportunities currently given for upscaling projects, for which funding has recently been #increased to #85% #for #SMEs, see https://lnkd.in/dv-eP_x5 . "Stay focused on your product, and take advantage of the ecosystem that Switzerland has to offer" Co-founders Andrada Muntean and Andrei Ardelean reflect on building NovoViz, the EPFL spin-off developing single-photon detectors for computational imaging. Watch: https://lnkd.in/dK6D_-SK About: NovoViz designs and manufactures in different technology nodes single-photon computational engines for applications that demand high sensitivity and high speed but cannot handle large amounts of data. The main purpose is to make single-photon technology more accessible to everyday users as currently available single-photon cameras are specialized pieces of equipment with high technological demands. We aim to enable novel research in fields such as quantum imaging and machine vision by reducing the experimental setup complexity and the overall costs. The technology used at NovoViz is established on 2 patent applications and more than 10 years of research. NovoViz is a spin-off of EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) and a 2024 alumnus of the highest stage of Venture Kick. #VentureKick #SwissStartups

Photonic chips will make it possible to build smaller, faster and energy-efficient devices using light instead of electrons. Following a positive opinion from the National Growth Fund advisory committee, this contribution from the second phase of PhotonDelta's funding is now being granted earlier and finally. This investment is needed for Dutch participation in the European consortium PIXEurope, with which contract talks have started to create a pilot production line for integrated photonics. Components of this pilot plant are envisaged in both Eindhoven and Enschede. If international negotiations for this participation succeed, the government itself, with the approval of the European Union, intends to publicly invest €66.3 million in it. In total, there is an intended investment in PIXEurope from 11 countries and the European Commission of €380 million. It is expected that €133 million of the total amount for this pilot production line will be invested within the Netherlands. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eceYjwge #fotonischechips #ChipsAct #NGF #PIXEurope #PhotonDelta #integratedphotonics #pilotline

Those interested in learning about trully sustainable inventment, pay attention to Almudena´s explanation: “Deep Tech means Disruptive Technologies, but these Deep Tech Technologies have two main pillar: one of them is digital one and the other one is the Deep Science one. At Deep Science we are talking about advanced materials, nanotechnology, industrial biotech, micro and nano electronics… the physical, the tangible part of Deep Tech.”
Within the framework of S4i | Science for Industry, Jorge Sicilia, from BBVA Research, and also Almudena Trigo Lorenzo, president and founding partner of BeAble Capital, presented the first report on #investment in #DeepScience technologies prepared jointly with the title “European Deep Science Technologies : The time for Science Equity is now.” In this excerpt from her presentation at S4i Almudena clarifies the differences between #DeepTech, #DigitalTech and #DeepScience: “Deep Tech means Disruptive Technologies, but these Deep Tech Technologies have two main pillar: one of them is digital one and the other one is the Deep Science one. At Deep Science we are talking about advanced materials, nanotechnology, industrial biotech, micro and nano electronics… the physical, the tangible part of Deep Tech.” Being clear about this difference is very important, because Deep Science technologies have their own idiosyncrasies and require specialized investment, #ScienceEquity, to become an industry and reach society. MEET MORE MASTERS OF CHANGE: TODAY Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi, TNO. https://lnkd.in/eDUHDqbu . The Optica Global Photonics Economic Forum in Malaga on October 1st and 2nd is nearing. To prepare for meaningful connections, we are sharing a series of long-form interviews called the Masters of Change in Global Photonics. We have had very positive feedback about the interviews aired so far, Anthony Yu, Beck Mason, PhotonHub Europe VUB B-PHOT Brussels Photonics and Adam Carter. Here's the YouTube link: https://lnkd.in/eDUHDqbu . The interview is too long for Linkedin. Today, we will speak with Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi, the CEO and Chairman of the board at TNO in the Netherlands. He is participating in the strategy panel discussion in Malaga, which will examine how to match research lines with Industry Priorities. We receive many questions from young photonics companies trying to scale up production to serve new markets and increase their turnover. They often seek help from their national research and technology organisations, either financially or technically. But markets are accelerating; product life cycles have never been shorter. So how are the European RTO’s adapting their strategy to answer the urgent questions from young photonic companies? We recently spoke with Tjark at his home in the Netherlands. After he introduced himself, we asked him about the changes he is bringing to one of Europe's leading RTOs, what it means for (photonic) startups and his preferred future. I think it is well worth watching. Let me know your comments below or directly. Suggestions for future interviews are also welcome.

Meet Project ARMS, our #energy Graphene Flagship sister project! ⚡️⚡️ We had the pleasure to meet them at the Graphene Flagship Common Kick-off Meeting and Science and Technology Forum in Gothenburg 🇸🇪 ⬢ The overall objective of #ProjectARMS (Atomic layer-coated gRaphene electrode-based Micro-flexible and Structural supercapacitors) is to integrate comprehensive materials and processes, including #graphene-rich bio-based carbon materials and graphene-decorated carbon fibers. They will also develop scalable and cost-effective atomic layer deposition manufacturing technology to fabricate totally eco-friendly supercapacitors with energy density reaching > 50 Wh/kg that is comparable to batteries without sacrificing the power density, cycle life or eco-friendliness, and open up opportunities to establish a new value chain for supercapacitor manufacturing with European SMEs as key players ♻️ From the #GRAPHERGIAproject, we are already networking and finding synergies with them for potential collaborations! Read more about their activities at the #GrapheneEU event 👉 https://lnkd.in/dEXsMYxc
