#Swissphotonics_Lunch_Chat on Tuesday Nov 26, 2024 from 12:00 to 12:45 on Perovskite PV Technology – on the verge to commercialization. Since the discovery of the surprisingly remarkable properties of organo-lead-halide semiconductors derived from solution, researchers have enthusiastically exmbarked on uncovering ways to harness this material in optoelectronics. A major milestone was achieved with the development of single-junction solar cells reaching efficiencies above 26%, rivaling those of crystalline silicon (c-Si). Perhaps even more significant for future developments is the recent breakthrough in silicon-perovskite tandem structures, now delivering cell efficiencies exceeding 34%. Despite frequent concerns about lead toxicity and stability issues, industries worldwide have embraced this technology. Significant investments have enabled the establishment of production facilities with an annual capacity of 100 MWp, with plans to scale up to 1 GWp in the near future. Meanwhile, other companies are focusing on niche applications that require smaller photovoltaic surfaces but in higher volumes. Are we witnessing the fastest revolution in PV technology, or will hindsight reveal this to be the field's most spectacular hype?

The European Space Deep-tech Innovation Centre (ESDI) is a center of excellence established as a partnership of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Switzerland. Under leadership of ESA and in collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), ESDI develops and commercializes deep-tech for space. Join us for next week's Swissphotonics lunch chat by Johann Richard, Head of ESDI who will talk about its mission to accelerate deep-tech innovation by setting up a cooperative research framework, guiding research teams, and funding innovative research programs. The core elements of the program include a focus on use-inspired, transformative research with a credible short-term potential for commercial applications and immediate practical impact. One of the key upcoming research programs focuses on quantum technology, implemented in partnership with the PSI. This program aims to explore and develop quantum technologies applicable to space, addressing some of the most challenging problems faced by ESA and its Member States, see The European Space Deep-tech Innovation Centre ESDI – accelerating deep-tech. #Swissphotonics_Lunch_Chat Date: Tuesday, November 19, 2024, 12:00-12:45
