HR: I rejected a candidate's job application twice, thinking they were overqualified. Fast forward to today, I'm working with them on a project and I'm blown away by their dedication and work ethic. The lesson I learned: never underestimate the power of a second chance. Don't dismiss candidates just because they don't fit your initial expectations. "Everyone is looking for something" like that famous song says... Many people are looking for a good job, companies are looking for the right fit to fill those roles. Everyone is stressed, candidates and companies invest time, money, have expectations and they hope the process won't take too long. I have experienced both sides of the hiring process. Always remember, it's a two-way process, and while you can negotiate your salary or some benefit an important value as respect, should always be there when it comes to interactions. Considering candidates who might be misrepresenting: There can be layers of understanding, where HR might realize the circumstances driving certain decisions and give someone a second chance in a competitive process. n an interview.... HR: "What's your salary expectation " Candidate: " 15000 to 20000 a month. HR: if we can't pay up to 10000, should we not bother making you an offer? You are the best fit for the role but I'm afraid we can't afford you. Candidate: Okay. 10000 would be fine. HR: How soon can you resume? Meanwhile, the budget for that particular role is 20000 HR smiles and feels like hero, The management will be happy that I cut costs for the organisation. A few weeks after new employee resumes, he notices the pay disparity. Guess what happens? Dissatisfaction. Toxicity. Disengagement. Two months later, the employee leaves the organization for a better job. The recruitment process starts all over again. Leading to more cost, performance gaps within the team and by extension, the whole organization. In the game of recruitment, retaining talent is the ultimate goal. And to do that, we need to respect their worth and invest in them. If HR truly wishes to be seen as heroes, they should strive to create a win-win scenario from the start.
