The HBdV Fellows introduce themselves. We start with Merle-Sophie Thielmann from the Universität Mannheim. At the #7ECSLHE, I present a seminar concept introducing pre-service teachers to diversity-oriented school improvement processes. Students gained insight into the implementation of these processes during visits to cooperating schools and reflected on their future roles in shaping the schools they will work at. The presentation of the seminar concept is supplemented by qualitative analyses of students' written reflections and group discussions on the potential benefits of service learning in a) addressing the challenges faced by schools in socially disadvantaged areas and b) preparing pre-service teachers for teaching at and shaping schools in increasingly diverse environments.

Ever hear “Bring Home Ec back” or “every child should take Home Ec like we used to”?? Well… the good news is – that it doesn’t need to be brought back as it has not gone away but has progressed over the past 100 years to continue to meet the needs of each generation and is now titled Family and Consumer Sciences(FCS). And, YES– every single student should be required to take FCS to be empowered with skillsets not only for career success but life success. To find out more about the power and possibility of FCS, I am excited to share a new resource that highlights the overview of FCS and how FCS continues today to prepare students for relevant and vitally important career clusters taught by educated and professional FCS educators. I hope you enjoy this article and help spread the word to those who comment that we need to “bring Home Ec back” that it is available across the country and if your child’s school does not offer it, advocate for them to add it and if FCS is offered in your child’s school make sure to get your child(ren) enrolled in FCS! The Alliance for Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS)released “Family and Consumer Sciences: Overview of a 100-year-old Industry Sector.” This foundational document showcases FCS's essential contributions to preparing individuals for diverse and meaningful careers. Spanning sectors such as education, hospitality, interior and fashion design and construction, and community services, it highlights how FCS supports both students and professionals in achieving career and life success. Supported by Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America®, Inc. (FCCLA®), the document reinforces the Alliance's commitment to elevating the global profile of FCS as a critical career cluster. FCCLA plays a pivotal role in integrating FCS principles into real-world applications, ensuring students gain practical workforce development and employment experience alongside their education. Through hands-on learning in FCS classes, FCCLA empowers nearly 245,000 students nationwide to develop leadership, career readiness, and essential workforce skills. By fostering these critical competencies, FCCLA and FCS education are shaping the next generation of leaders, ensuring students are prepared to make impactful contributions to their families, careers, and communities. 🙋🏿♂️Here's a burning question: Adaptation or Transformation? Your answer could lead you to powerless effort or effortless power.🤔🤔 I got a story to tell... After presenting at three incredible conferences recently—the ICLCA Conference, HBCU-FNC Conference, and AAC&U Conference—one theme keeps surfacing: colleges and universities are striving for transformation. Their commitment to thinking big and embracing change is inspiring! But here's the question: Are we achieving true transformation or simply adapting? Many efforts focus on changing the environment around students—new technologies, expanded support services, and updated resources. While these are valuable, they don’t address the most critical factor: transforming how students approach and engage with their academic work. True transformation lightens the load for faculty and staff, creates sustainable change, and empowers students to succeed in meaningful ways. Without it, we risk working harder without seeing the enduring results we hope for. Transformation starts small but soon becomes all-consuming. Want to see what academic transformation really looks like? Check out The Florida Poly Story: https://lnkd.in/egJV_JCR Let’s keep the conversation going and keep making transformation a reality for students and educators. It's your turn to share your transformation story! #HigherEd #AcademicTransformation #StudentSuccess

This week Liz Gross, Ph.D. attended the Mackinac Roundtable on Talent held by the Michigan Colleges Alliance. Liz presented with Mike Moss, CAE on informing institutional transformation with social intelligence. They shared how public confidence in higher education is at an all-time low, with public perception and online word-of-mouth is impacting enrollment, student experience, and revenue. Yet many presidents oversee planning and transformation initiatives without a data-driven, audience-centric approach. The discussion shared results from our social intelligence research on the public's perception of higher ed and the insights and planning approaches needed to rebuild trust over the next 2-4 years. https://lnkd.in/gj9ZSZ8T Get a sampling of Mike's approach to strategic planning the importance of data to during the environmental scanning and evaluation process. https://lnkd.in/gj6JEHGZ

Public K-12 is often considered a public good. Why not higher education? Thx to Yolanda Watson Spiva and CCA for continuing the discussion. How do we frame our conversations around this ‘public good?’ Living and working a state focused on economic and workforce development, I see a pretty clear linkage between the value of post sec as a public good and the continued identification and development of more opps for all South Carolinians. Instead of why … ask why not?
"To restore public trust in higher education — which can increase participation in our democracy and improve civic culture — we must reframe higher education as a public good." - CCA President Yolanda Watson Spiva, Ph.D., BCC. Dr. Watson Spiva has been in Indianapolis today, presenting and meeting with higher education and policy leaders from across the country as part of the Civic Learning and Democracy Engagement Coalition, of which CCA is a lead partner. #CCADoesTheWork

Successful collaboration between academic institutions and their online and professional continuing education units is essential for their sustained success, fostering open communication, and knowledge sharing. However, the 2024 State of Continuing Education survey, published by Modern Campus in partnership with the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education (CAUCE), The EvoLLLution, and UPCEA, reveals a number of challenges, with a notable percentage of respondents expressing dissatisfaction with institutional leadership’s efforts, highlighting potential missed opportunities for lifelong learning support. Real stories from real people about how #RPL can transform careers
When TV presenter, producer, broadcaster, activist, designer, and well-known Irish personality Brendan Courtney discovered the #RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process, he embarked on a life-changing journey in higher education. The RPL process allowed him to have his diverse skills and talents recognised, enabling him to pursue a qualification in an area he is passionate about. University was not an option for Brendan after leaving school, but he always aspired to achieve a higher education qualification. He seized the opportunity to apply for the MA in Business in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (Level 9) at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. In this video, Brendan discusses the importance of the RPL process and the support he received at IADT helped him reflect on and value his formal, informal, and non-formal learning experiences. By his own admission, Brendan says that without RPL, he wouldn't have the Master's qualification that has given him the confidence to thrive and pursue his passion. Sincere thanks to Brendan for sharing his story with us. Every RPL journey is unique, making RPL impactful as it bridges various disciplines and career types. Thanks also to our project lead Rebecca Roper for bringing this wonderful story together and sharing it with us, and to colleague Louisa Keogh for making this possible! We hope that you enjoy watching this video and hearing his story as much as we did! 🔗 Find out more about RPL at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology here: https://lnkd.in/eAWanAqj #YourLearningCounts #RPL #LifelongLearning #HCIPillar3 #IADT Higher Education Authority Technological Higher Education Association (THEA) Irish Universities Association Atlantic Technological University Technological University of the Shannon Dundalk Institute of Technology South East Technological University Technological University Dublin Munster Technological University Dublin City University Trinity College Dublin University College Dublin University of Galway University of Limerick Maynooth University University College Cork

On the "exquisite tension" between innovation and tradition in higher education: "Institutions face a myriad of challenges and opportunities in building coalitions and systems on campuses that support Learning and Employment Record (LER) development. From the curricular side, Ashley Finley, Vice President of Research and Senior Advisor to the President at the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), reflected on the 'exquisite tension between innovation and tradition' in higher education, which is fundamental to understanding the challenges faced by faculty who are grappling with how to maintain disciplinary integrity while also preparing students for the workforce. Finley’s remarks underscore a broader challenge in higher education: how to reconcile traditional academic structures with the increasing demand for credentials that reflect real-world, transferable skills. This tension is at the heart of LER initiatives, where institutions must innovate while remaining true to their core academic missions.” via AACRAO: https://lnkd.in/eh97ggHz
