⚙️🔧 Advancing Health Equity Through Disruptive Innovation Moving the needle on health care access and health disparities is no easy task. Inequities for people of color are embedded in the U.S. health system, shaping their health care journeys and often leading to outcomes worse than those experienced by white Americans. That’s where Dr. Chris T. Pernell, MD, MPH, FACPM, director of NAACP’s Center for Health Equity, comes in. “Sometimes you got to make those systems bend, and other times you got to disrupt those systems, innovate and invent, and create and design.” In this episode of The Dose podcast, host Joel Bervell talks to Dr. Pernell about her work on #healthequity, the systems that need to be disrupted, and the innovations needed to build a more inclusive health system.

No one organization can address health equity challenges alone. Studies show social drivers of health (SDoH) impact patient outcomes far more than traditional healthcare delivery. But SDoH are complex, interconnected social mechanisms, requiring a multi-pronged approach to address. However, the business and nonprofit ecosystems often compel us to prioritize our own interests. At KC Health Collaborative we urge you to extend your focus. Think of the progress we can make toward health equity if we look beyond the confines of the current system. Meaningful change can only come from collaboration. Working together, community organizations and local businesses can pool resources, share expertise, and amplify their voices to tackle all inputs of social drivers of health head-on. Together, let's breakout of our silos, collaborate across sectors to reach more people in need, and drive sustainable change. Join us to create a healthier KC for all. Let’s get to work. #patientoutcomes #localbusiness #sdoh #healthequity #healthcaredelivery

🏥 #HealthEquity means ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. To do this, we need to come together and pool our resources to address the social determinants of health. 🤝 We recently hosted a webinar with the Stupski Foundation to discuss their approach to #RacialEquity in health and steps we can all take to implement sustainable change that uplifts entire communities. The three key takeaways for this session? 1️⃣ If you are a grantmaker or work with one, add an emphasis on racial health #equity into your existing work and encourage others—especially those with power—to talk directly about race. 2️⃣ Remember to view health as holistic, and to treat it that way. If you do not, you could be unintentionally contributing to disparities. 3️⃣ Consider how you can engage in both policy and practice at the same time. After witnessing firsthand a widening health equity gap in services as a clinician, Emily Sylvester explored technology-based maternal and infant health solutions to reach more underserved families faster. Emily Sylvester, CEO and Founder of Mother of Fact (NurtureTalk Inc.) in Langdon, NH, is one of many entrepreneurs developing innovative, non-medical solutions to address the urgent health equity gap in the US, where income-related health disparities rank among the worst globally. A new blog post shares how the power of partnership, perspective, and planning can enable the scaling of innovative, non-medical solutions that address disparities in the social drivers of health, meeting historically marginalized and underserved communities where they are. Our Principal Advisor and Research Director, Dr Danny Rock, recently attended the Advancing Equity Summit in Noosa where the focus was on addressing disparities and promoting health equity. Dr Michael McPhee, President of PolicyLink, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the historical roots of inequity and the challenges in creating an equitable economy, healthy communities of opportunity, and a just society by elevating what works and ensuring that all people can participate and prosper. Dr McPhee emphasised the importance of prefigurative practice, which involves individuals and organisations enacting the values and structures of the future society they want to create, right now, and building these into the organisation’s DNA. For this, he stressed the need for organisations to develop data-supported decision-making approaches and involve community members and regional stakeholders in data collection and interpretation. This approach helps build trust and sustain collaborative efforts to tackle health and social inequities at local and regional levels His keynote address foreshadowed the broad range of topics covered during the Summit. Health equity guides what we do, from strategic planning and capacity building to deliberate and targeted commissioning of primary health care services. The data we gather and analyse is critical in ensuring our approach to commissioning and primary health care support is both evidence-based and targeted. #healthequity #advancingequitysummit
