An interesting and frank take on Atma Nirbhar. A pragmatic comparison with the flagship ALH reveals a mixed picture of self-reliance and reliance on foreign components. Indigenisation of the ALH - The ALH program, initiated in 1979, was aimed at creating a multirole helicopter with significant indigenous capabilities. However, it has faced challenges in achieving complete self-sufficiency. Reports indicate that about **more than 50% of its components are imported**, particularly critical systems like the engine, which is the Turbomeca TM333-2B2, sourced from France. - While the Indian government has emphasized increasing domestic production, the ALH still integrates numerous imported parts, including avionics and materials, which reflects a broader trend seen in many countries where complete indigenisation is difficult to achieve due to technological and economic constraints. Comparison with Other Countries United States - The U.S. has a robust military-industrial complex but still imports components for various systems. For instance, between 2018 and 2022, the U.S. imported **365 engines, 271 missiles, and 50 naval weapons**. This indicates that even with a strong domestic manufacturing base, reliance on foreign technology remains significant. France - Similar to the U.S., France also imports a substantial number of military components. In the same timeframe, France imported **367 aircraft, 108 engines, and 14 missiles**. This highlights that even established military powers depend on a mix of domestic and foreign sources for their defense needs. Russia - Russia, historically reliant on its own defense industry, has also engaged in co-production agreements with other countries, such as India with the BrahMos missile. This collaboration shows that even nations with strong defense capabilities recognize the value of foreign partnerships to enhance their military technologies. Conclusion The ALH's indigenisation level, while commendable, reflects a common reality in global defense manufacturing: complete self-sufficiency is rare. Countries like the U.S. and France, despite their advanced military-industrial capabilities, also rely on foreign components. The trend towards indigenisation is a strategic goal for many nations, including India, but it often coexists with necessary imports to ensure technological advancement and operational effectiveness. On October 7, 2024, the U.S. Department of State approved a potential sale of the EA-37B electronic attack mission system to Italy, valued at $680 million. This transaction, officially notified to Congress by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), aims to enhance Italy's interoperability with U.S. air forces and bolster its capabilities for international contingency operations. The proposed sale includes not only the EA-37B aircraft but also essential support components such as training, spare parts, and maintenance. This initiative follows two years after the Italian Ministry of Defense expressed its intention to acquire the electronic attack system to equip two Gulfstream G-550 aircraft. By integrating the EA-37B into its fleet, Italy will become the first foreign government to operate this highly classified Compass Call system. This advancement is expected to significantly improve Italy’s ability to counter current and future threats by disrupting enemy command and control communications during overseas operations. The acquisition aligns with Italy's broader defense strategy outlined in its multiyear planning document (Documento Programmatico Pluriennale della Difesa) for 2022-2024, which emphasizes modernizing its military assets and enhancing capabilities for multi-domain operations. The Italian Air Force has already acquired two G-550 CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) aircraft as part of this initiative, further solidifying its role as a key player in NATO operations. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce #pilots #italy #italian

Col Kunwar Varun Singh Tanwar, VSM Absolute indigenization is almost impossible. In essence it means indigenization of critical technologies. For reference, in global arms import ranking, USA is 11th at 2.8% global share. Other major arms manufacturing/exporting nations are importers as well. However, in their case import of critical technology is rare. It is mostly raw materials or subsystems or low end items in the value chain. #india #aatmanirbharbharat #makeinindia #export #import
