Rehabilitation nurses will take courses like anatomy and physiology, learn about the different types of therapies and the psychosocial aspects of care. But it's not until they start working directly with patients, and seeing their progress from start to finish, that they experience the emotional satisfaction of helping someone resume living their life after an injury or surgery, or the fulfillment of providing ongoing care if they deal with a disability or disorder. How many years of experience did you include in your resume? 🧐 Your most recent experience is the most relevant and what employers want to know about. Limit the amount of experience you detail to the last 10 years. You can fudge this timeline a bit for relevant roles just outside the timeline. If you have more than 10 years of experience, you can include an optional summary at the end of your experience that covers your previous roles and skills. It's Trauma Tuesday!! Today we'll discuss a Resuscitative Thoracotomy. In layman's terms, "cracking the chest" is an emergency procedure that a trauma surgeon performs in an attempt to stop bleeding and restart the heart. Resuscitative Thoracotomies are only performed on patients who are actively dying and is intended to stop life-threatening bleeding within the chest. It is most commonly performed during the initial resuscitative phase of care in the Emergency Department. During this procedure, a trauma surgeon can cross-clamp the aorta, repair a laceration in the pericardium or myocardium, relieve a cardiac tamponade (build up of blood in the sac surrounding the heart), and perform internal cardiac massage. A Thoracotomy is indicated for patients who have experienced a penetrating trauma and have experienced a loss of pulses for less than 15 minutes. There is some controversy about how effective a Resuscitative Thoracotomy is following a blunt trauma resulting in cardiac arrest. A Thoracotomy is often considered a "last ditch effort" procedure since the procedure itself carries a very high mortality rate. I have personally seen 2 patients receive a Resuscitative Thoracotomy and live to walk out of the hospital within my 21 year nursing career.
