We were honoured to host Dr Steve Watson from Cambridge University on December 12th for an insightful presentation on generative artificial intelligence. Dr Watson shared a comprehensive overview of the history of AI and provided a theoretical framing on our mediation of meaning through this technology. He highlighted practical applications and finally engaged us in thoughtful discussions on the ethical and political dimensions of mainstreaming AI in our practices. Our team at the Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation, along with development practitioners and researchers, were truly inspired by the potential of generative AI to enhance both research and practical applications in our fields. This session underscored the urgent need for research institutions, development organisations, and governments to seriously support and invest in the development and strengthening of AI capabilities. In deepening my understanding of generative AI, I look forward to reading Steve’s forthcoming publication ‘Emergent Discourses on Generative AI in Education and Society’ (Cambridge University Press). Using an advanced 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲, 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗦𝗧𝗠), we have explored the complex ethical landscape of this rapidly evolving field. The recent poll results for "What do you think might explain the trend of the scientific community refraining from acknowledging the integration of tools in their work?" are out. Thank you for the overwhelming response. A significant majority (75%) voted for unclear guidelines being the primary obstacle refraining them from acknowledging the tools in publication work. A noteworthy 10%, conceded fear of criticism from peers, while another 10% conceded to being apprehensive about rejection of their research work. The rest thought of penalties associated with the use of AI as the reason for not declaring. Evidently, unclear guidelines are the most concerning factor in the scientific community. This underscores the urgent need to establish clear guidelines to steer the scientific community in the world of AI.
