President Irfaan Ali has modified the government's previous cash grant proposal, announcing a direct payment of $100,000 to each Guyanese adult who is 18 years or older by January 1, 2024. The revised strategy replaces the earlier household-based approach, focusing on individual eligibility and streamlined distribution. In a comprehensive broadcast across radio, television, and internet platforms, Ali detailed the new grant mechanism. The payment will require verification through national identification or a valid Guyanese passport, ensuring a transparent and equitable process. Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo revealed that a specialized software application is currently under development to manage the grant's distribution. The digital platform will include mandatory fields for citizen information, including personal details, contact information, identification numbers, and geographical location. Read more

Column 2 of 7 Economically vulnerable consumers Bad treatment of economically vulnerable consumers by the financial sector Many financial service companies create a range of barriers to their customers, particularly when they want to complain. And it is made even worse for economically challenged customers Economically challenged customers can range from people with partial or total hearing, seeing or speech problems, through to those who are forgetful, and people who cannot operate a computer or simply cannot afford the repeated phone calls to required to deal with a complaint. This is particularly the case as people grow older. They could include your father, mother, grandmother and grandfather. The institutions from banks to insurers, as well as financial scoundrels, make it worse by simply exploiting them for their money and then lead them into a maze where most people, including those with disabilities, simply give up on their justified complaints. The new Miss South Africa, Mia Le Roux, said at her crowning about her deafness: ‘At the tender age of two, I was blessed by my community with the gift of a cochlear implant. Family, friends and strangers rallied to raise funds for this operation – a life-changing opportunity that allowed me to hear. It was also the start of a long journey to listen to sound and connect with the world through speech, a journey that also has taught me to never give up. ‘It took two years of speech therapy and continued repetition of words before I looked up to the sky one day and said my first four words: ‘Kyk daar, wit wolke – look there, white clouds’. ‘Today, it is my turn to be your community, to be a voice for those who, like me, have experienced the challenges of being different and feeling excluded.’ Treating economically challenged customers is more than putting up a wheelchair accessible ramp at the instiutions front door! In recent examples the City of Cape Town took steps to help the vulnerable, while tax adviser, TaxTim, made it far worse. I’m very concerned about South Africa’s overall decline in financial literacy. It has severe consequences for our people, and the decline is worse among women, older people and people who live in rural areas. I was glad to be able to share my concerns with the nation via SABC News yesterday, #WorkersDay. African Response is working to close this gap through partnering with organisations in the financial services sector to deliver consumer financial education targeting rural communities. #FinancialLiteracy https://lnkd.in/dGYMPtQW
