Typically, Corner Meetings, are casual encounters with members of the slum community and can take place at tea stalls or kirana stores etc. They play a key role in reinforcing the message, discussions and actions to be taken. The pandemic has exposed and exacerbated many challenges in our communities, but it has also highlighted the invaluable role of small community development corporations (CDCs). These organizations have been on the frontlines, supporting residents and businesses through unprecedented times. However, as Bill Taft from Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) points out in his recent opinion piece, many small CDCs are now struggling after depleting their reserves to support their communities. Back to basics in community development! Addressing basic needs is crucial for effective interventions. Maslow's Hierarchy of needs highlights the importance of fulfilling physiological and safety needs before emotional well-being. How can practitioners navigate these dilemmas effectively? Possible solutions: - Conduct a needs analysis before implementation, including food parcel costs or a stipend in project budgets. - Engage in community resource mapping for referrals and partnerships with organizations providing basic needs outreach. - Develop an advocacy strategy based on gathered information. - Incorporate economic strengthening and income generation into interventions. Recently, we partnered with the Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development Officials (VAHCDO). Funded by a Virginia HousingCommunity Engagement Grant, we developed a customizable Landlord Engagement Toolkit designed to: 🏠 Reach and engage private landlords about affordable housing programs 🏠 Dispel the stigma associated with lower-income housing and our neighbors who qualify for it The Toolkit included videos, social media, posters and brochures for VAHCDO members to use in their community outreach efforts.  We know there’s still much work to be done. That’s why we’re calling on all affordable housing professionals, advocates, and agencies to join us in this mission.
