Health authorities send out thousands of letters and various forms of written communications every day, but many of them remain unanswered. In this WHO Regional Office for Europe policy brief, we show how tools and methods from behavioural science can improve written health communications to the public.
Behavioural scientist with extensive experience applying behavioural insights to drive measurable improvements, leading projects, supporting and establishing new teams, and facilitating workshops and training.
It is a real pleasure that our Better letters guide is finally publicly available! While behavioural science encompasses far more than communication alone, letters remain a vital method to engage the public, patients and health professionals - whether it is to encourage cancer screening, hospital appointment attendance, or appropriate antibiotics prescribing. Making letters more behaviourally informed has been a common thread in my career. Thanks to the combined experience of Katrine Bach Habersaat, Christoph Henking and colleagues at the WHO Regional Office for Europe and examples from Michael Hallsworth, Armenak Antinyan, PhD, Robert Murphy and many others, we've distilled this into 9 practical considerations to improve the quality and effectiveness of letters (or other communication materials). Explore how to craft better letters yourself by reading the full guide here: https://lnkd.in/e9jEP-y4

💉 Did you know that over half the world’s vaccine supply is made in developing countries? An estimated 60% of vaccine manufacturing capacity lies across primarily Asia, but also Africa and South America - while communicable diseases continue to be a significant public health concern in these regions. 🌏 As they say global South diseases require global South solutions, so how can these regions be empowered for vaccine self-sufficiency, and to further strengthen regional manufacturing capabilities? These past few years I have had the good fortune to work with the Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN International) - an international alliance of vaccine manufacturers based in low- and middle-income countries, which aims to increase the availability of affordable, high-quality vaccines, especially for use in developing countries where communicable diseases are a significant public health concern. ✨ DCVMN is a positive force in the world that champions and heralds change, engaging in advocacy to ensure that the voices of developing countries are represented in global health decision-making processes and vaccine procurement systems. 💪🏼 The DCVMN empowers local manufacturers through capacity building, facilitating knowledge exchange and fostering collaboration, to enhance the self-reliance of developing countries in vaccine production, and thereby contributing to global immunization goals and public health security. 🎯 With the continued emergence of infectious diseases and the challenges posed by global health inequities, the network will remain a crucial force in ensuring that all people, regardless of where they live, have access to life-saving vaccines. It is my privilege to celebrate their silver jubilee with them in Sao Paulo this week and to be part of the annual gathering of DCVMs and key stakeholders. 🎉 Congratulations to the team at DCVMN on a remarkable 25 years, and my deepest gratitude for the good work and significant impact for global health! Long COVID Scotland - Dr. Sally Witcher and Jane Ormerod Sally Witcher, PhD and Jane Ormerod from long COVID Scotland discuss the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and long COVID in the United Kingdom and Scotland. The presenters stressed the lack of available healthcare for those suffering from long COVID and also the lack of gathering data and transparency regarding the magnitude of the problem. Governmental strategies are over reliant on vaccinations and even if vaccines produced ironclad durable immunity, they are not widely available to the general public. Few if any are masking, including medical personnel in major healthcare centers. Similar to many countries, there is rampant misinformation which is inhibiting the public health response. Currently, the United Kingdom's workforce is being adversely affected to a large degree by chronic illnesses, but there remains little discussion or recognition of the impacts of long COVID. As the 77th session of the World Health Assembly nears and we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), which has saved over 154 million lives in the last 50 years, it's crucial to remember that many children still lack access to vital vaccines, especially in conflict and humanitarian settings. To address this, the International Rescue Committee, World Vision International, and Village Reach are co-hosting an event during WHA to strategize on reaching these underserved communities and advancing global immunization objectives. Register to listen to a panel of government officials, policymakers, donors, and NGO leaders to learn more about approaches for reaching the most vulnerable children with immunization. 📆 Thursday, May 30, 2024 🕒 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM CEST 📍 Gavi Global Campus, Geneva (or online) 🔗Register to attend (in-person or virtually): https://lnkd.in/ep6fR--V #WorldHealthAssembly #immunization #vaccinessavelives #humanlypossible #globalhealth
